Will no longer shop at Giant- annoying checkout machine

I take one or two expensive items per trip (usually 3 trips a week) and I simply don't scan it. Yesterday I walked with $22 of Peets coffee beans for free. Last week I didn't scan $16 of British Cheddar.

If they want me to bring my own bags, check myalf out, pack all my things, they can either adjust price to account for my labor or I will.

You are the problem and we are all paying for your behavior.

It seems like a bargain to pay someone $10 an hour to scan groceries and reduce theft and increase customer service. But maybe I don't understand grocery store finances.

ROFL. It’s 2023. They are hiring not a damn person at “$10 an hour” to scan your groceries. Nope.

Giant thinks it is saving money by not hiring people to check out the customers. However, Giant did not factor in shrinkage - they are losing tons to theft - but likely have no idea.

You think they have no idea? You think you’ve figured out something large national grocery chains don’t know? Girl, please.

This. I refuse to use self checkout unless I have 5 items or less. At all the grocery stores I use the wait is usually not that long but I try not to shop during prime time.

If everyone refused to use the self checkers that might make a difference. I don’t want to support people losing their jobs.

This has been covered. It’s nonsense.

Those with a full cart who have no idea what they are doing hold up the line for the rest of us, esp those with little kids who let the kids do the scanning. Newsflash, grocery shopping is not an experience, it's a chore to be done, and getting in, doing your shopping and getting out is the goal.

Hint, you get audited with self scanner if you have 7 items or less

How dare families who need more than a few items go out in public. You should probably hiss to shame them.

The nerve of some people to shop in public…

Are you always this ridiculously melodramatic, or only on DCUM?

The new 20-item limit is fine for the small self-checkouts but my Giant also has two regular-sized checkouts (with conveyor belts, the kind where checkers used to work) set up as self-checkouts. That does not have the 20-item limit yet. If they try to impose it there, they will get reamed by customers. A lot of people use those two measly full-sized self-checkouts for larger amounts of shopping because most of the time, day or night, there are only ONE to two actual checkers working, and most often it's just one.

Yup. And it drives me crazy when people with 1 or 2 items in their hands use those lanes instead of the express lanes.

You are ridiculous!

I used to love my Giant, but self-checkout is dragging it right downhill. I blame the damn robot!

Bullcrap. Self-checkout is the choice of the retailer and is obviously more prone to theft. There is an easy solution - bring back checkers.

“Bring back checkers” isn’t happening, MeeMaw.

It will if consumers do something. Your insults just make you look bad

Just leave. Let the store have to discard all of the perishables and restock all of the non-perishables. If enough people do this, they'll fix the machines

Your tantrums change nothing, but hey, they make you feel good and that’s what’s important.

Why are you on here caping so hard for crooked-ass Giant?

I have no opinion on Giant one way or the other. I just loathe (and laugh at) lazy people whining “OMG briiiiiing back the cashiiiiieeerrrrs.”

You are a child. People do want those jobs. You must be a manager at one of the local giants and your attitude towards the customer fits with everything I see there

It's done due to crime. You think Giant really wants to make the self-checkout experience more annoying for customers? They have to, because of theft and no prosecution by the district attorneys.

Do you think the police are showing up and arresting people for stealing from the grocery store? Because if you do, then I have an excellent investment opportunity for you.

I’ve heard them on my local police scanner regularly hitting the Walmart to pick up shoplifters. You’d be wrong to assume they are ignoring it.

I’m really over this everywhere. Companies keep finding more ways to put the burden of service onto customers while simultaneously increasing prices.

This is so true. I think we should demand an employee discount. We are working at the store.
Plus the produce is half rotten all the time. Gross.

Giants produce has always been crap.

For those of us who like to cook this wouldn’t work. I often decide what I’m going to make based on what I see in the store. I’ve used pickup and something gets screwed up every time.

+1

Giant has the worst produce, meat, etc. Not sure how the locals tolerate it.

Love Samsclub for the scan with phone function. Wish Costco had the same.

I agree with you on annoying self checkouts at Costco. Why can’t I just scan the barcodes? They do check at the door so it’s not like I can shoplift.

The cashiers also started asking to unload the cart instead of just putting things barcodes up and scanning them in the cart.
Super annoying

I love when I get a fast employee at Costco who will scan inside my cart! Only during busy times though, otherwise I have to do it myself and take all the items out. Though I’ve found if you mess something up they will sometimes just finish for you. The phone scanner at Sam’s is good, but in general we just a crappy Sam’s that isn’t as well run or as well stocked as Sam’s in other places. I have no idea why.

I got sighs and almost a reprimand last time I didn’t unload my cart at Costco.

You have to look confused and sort of helpless, like you will be really slow. I've noticed at my Costco they almost always scan for all of the old people in self checkout, whereas I'm probably 50/50. I tried to look as slow as possible though and I also try to go to a self-checkout that has an efficient-looking employee standing next to it (if multiple stations are open at once.)

I have never ever seen an inefficient Costco checker. Admit it, they are the terminators of checkers. They can check you out so fast that you actually go back in time and get home before you left.
