Eh. Every kid on DCUM has a unweighted 4.0 and many of these have an SAT in the 1400s or even lower. That right there should tell you that a 4.0 today ain't what it used to be.

I see the 1400 SATs or the 30 ACTs paired with these perfect GPAs. It just doesn’t add up. People claim their kids just are not good test takers. How in the world did they get through high school without a single B if they are not good test takers? Do public schools allow retakes on tests or something? My kid is at rigorous private with tough grading and no APs. 3.1 GPA and 34 ACT (not superscored).

1400 SAT is the 95th percentile.

Of course some schools weight different but no my DS didn’t have a single B in HS and still doesn’t in college. He’s not great with standardized tests but he got all 4/5 on AP exams. 1390 sat. His biggest issue is that math is not a strong suit so his score shows that.

Most colleges, especially UVA, who prioritizes GPA over test scores, will take a lower test score with high GPA over a high test score and low GPA. Your kid, with the low GPA and high test score, looks like a slacker to college admissions officers. Not saying he is. My son has severe ADHD, so has both lower GPA and lower test score, but incredible brilliance elsewhere, which got him into Georgetown--so I feel your pain with the non-inflated GPAs at rigorous privates. But high test scores simply do not predict outcomes over high GPAs.

Well my DS who got into UVA with a 4.6 and a 1380 sat (during Covid) is now a second year with a 3.95 gpa and just got into two of the most competitive application based majors at UVA. Me thinks the admissions people know that a 4.6 gpa over four years of rigorous HS is a better or as least as good indicator of success as a 1500+ Score.

GPA has always been a better indicator. It shows grit, determination and hard work over time to maintain an almost all A report cards. I'd much rather have someone who works hard day in and day out than someone who is really smart but doesn't put in the effort all the time

Regular academic tests on material you have learned are very different than the ACT/SAT.

It’s painful to watch these kids work so hard, do so well and not get in places.
So I agree ‘take that Iva’

Thank you! Sorry to sound bitter but to be frank and honest I am. I find it absurd that these tippy top students (IE top 5% of their class) can not get accepted into their state university. Texas seems to understand and will at least admit the top 6% of each class to their flagship school(s); maybe not into their first choice major but at least admitted. Also finding it telling that son is getting accepted to schools that are not test optional anymore (Purdue, possible Ga Tech). I am thrilled for all the kids accepted to UVA but I think I am also allowed to experience frustration and harbor some bitterness toward UVA. Sour taste in my mouth.

It’s really surprising your DC didn’t get with those stats! I would be bitter too. I hope he ends up somewhere he loves!

100% disagree with you. Grade inflation (LCPS, looking @ you) is rampant, particularly since the pandemic. Cheating is also rampant. That’s another things that’s unpalatable to me about test optional— it used to raise admissions red flags when test scores and GPA were not similarly high.

My kids graduated LCPS in 2021 and there was no grade inflation, other than what happened during online school during the pandemic. Are you saying those policies have continued?

GPA means almost NOTHING these days. Every kid on DCUM has a 4.0 unweighted.

It's ridiculous. These large DMV districts are graduating thousands of kids each year who have prefect grades.

I don’t know why so many posters think their kids have a God-given right to get into the University of Virginia when it is a top 25 ranked national University.

There are hundreds of other schools. UVA is not the end all.

A 3.1? Yikes.

He should try prepping to get that score to a 35 or 36. 35 is kind of a minimum at some places. Though I’m not sure he can overcome the GPA.

A 3.1 is about median GPA at my kid's private
