Next cycle apps will probably be over 66,000 and the overall admit rate at around 16%. As the dean said, best of luck in your college search!

Co-worker's child is doing this now. Year has gone by fast and has been good transition - kind of like prep school - before heading to main campus. May not be for everyone but they have no complaints and are excited about next year.

The school says that if the requirements are met a transfer is “truly” guaranteed. Sounds like a great plan.

Congrats. To the kid into Purdue (and sorry about the game)
It’s painful to watch these kids work so hard, do so well and not get in places.
So I agree ‘take that Iva’

Thank you! Sorry to sound bitter but to be frank and honest I am. I find it absurd that these tippy top students (IE top 5% of their class) can not get accepted into their state university. Texas seems to understand and will at least admit the top 6% of each class to their flagship school(s); maybe not into their first choice major but at least admitted. Also finding it telling that son is getting accepted to schools that are not test optional anymore (Purdue, possible Ga Tech). I am thrilled for all the kids accepted to UVA but I think I am also allowed to experience frustration and harbor some bitterness toward UVA. Sour taste in my mouth.

Eh. Every kid on DCUM has a unweighted 4.0 and many of these have an SAT in the 1400s or even lower. That right there should tell you that a 4.0 today ain't what it used to be.

Sounds like a way to encourage cheating out of fear of not making the cut. Teaches them how to game the system. Give me a class full of kids that are excellent in some subjects and decent in others. I fear we are creating a generation of grade grubbing, burned out, back stabbing neurotic robots.

My junior DS and I were talking about chatgpt, per a teacher’s email, and he said everyone cheats. He’s the frank one of my kids.

Also, my older kid didn’t get in last year with similar stats oos.

Well my DS who got into UVA with a 4.6 and a 1380 sat (during Covid) is now a second year with a 3.95 gpa and just got into two of the most competitive application based majors at UVA. Me thinks the admissions people know that a 4.6 gpa over four years of rigorous HS is a better or as least as good indicator of success as a 1500+ Score.

My kid should have taken CC classes instead of UVA classes oh, well

incorrect. No idea where the UVA news article got it's data, but Dean J stated in her blog yesterday that the 2022-223 overall acceptance rate is 27% and OOS is 12%. She provides all the data and presents it clearly. Disregard the school paper.

But Dead of Admissions Greg Roberts is Dean J’s boss. I think he’s saying just for the admissions decisions yesterday do those lower percentages apply.

For CS, UMD is far superior compared to UVA. Please have a look at csrankings.org.

Not if you are Va in-state

If this is based on tuition, surprisingly there is not much difference for engineering schools between the two. As I had looked last time, it was a difference of about 7k. 45k for UVA vs 52K for UMD. If you get some merit scholarship, that difference becomes even smaller.

Community college.
You can take CC calculus, for example, and get a better grade than you would “same” class @UVA.
Some students have multiple institutions making up their total credits toward the degree.

I see the 1400 SATs or the 30 ACTs paired with these perfect GPAs. It just doesn’t add up. People claim their kids just are not good test takers. How in the world did they get through high school without a single B if they are not good test takers? Do public schools allow retakes on tests or something? My kid is at rigorous private with tough grading and no APs. 3.1 GPA and 34 ACT (not superscored).

Boy? Does your Dc do a busy sport? Maybe your DC’s study hours just aren’t there.
