The shooter was a confirmed Mormon but no longer is. Would like to see the Church condemn what the shooter did. (Maybe they already have?) I certainly do not believe the speech posted above invoking the founders of the Church having to fight for their lives and in many cases be slaughtered over their beliefs was a call to violence against homosexuals. |

“The senseless act of violence in Colorado Springs is of great sadness and concern to us. We are greatly troubled by any violence in our communities and condemn most especially violent acts that are the result of intolerance against any of God's children. ..." 2/
Well said LDS spokesperson |

Omg the shooter’s father was relived his son wasn’t gay when he found out about the shooting. WTF?! Father of the year! /s
The shooter comes from a completely trash family. I suspect he was gay and couldn’t handle it. The fact that you have posted his family is Mormon, say no more. My sister is Mormon. I grew up around Mormon kids out West. They are absolutely anti-gay! I don’t care if the head of the church says they aren’t. The members are the absolutely the meanest people I have been around. Mormons and Westboro Baptist Church who protested a place I was at.. both are very similar. |
But they planted the seed of hate. Mormons hate LGBTQ+ deeply. They’ve preached hatred and intolerance for years. |
| I loved this essay by Lauren though: This Holiday, I’m Going to a Gay Bar https://nyti.ms/3Xsd8Qw |
Depends on your experience, we have Mormon relatives in our family, Mormon coworkers, Mormon friends, and they are the kindest, most tolerant folks I know. The Mormons in our family are solidly blue politically speaking and have a family member who is gay. |
I personally know pro LGBTQ+ Mormons. Not all Mormons are this way. Not all Christians are this way. |
You can suspect all you want, but mental health issues as a result of a broken home, especially one with a drug-addicted porn involved father, are well-documented. He was clearly a troubled young man, based on his previous encounter with law enforcement. His mother was all over Facebook asking for good mental health counselors for her son. Sounds more to me like he deliberately picked on a group that would give him the most media attention. Had he opened fire at a Trump rally or country music concert, it would not be the ‘cause du jour’. People on DCUM have a habit of making up motives, especially when the perpetrator gives a motive they don’t like. |
You're stretching really hard to pin this on LDS. There are much more plausible influences in the shooter's life that may have inspired the violence. LDS may not be progressive but they tend to be nonviolent. Disagreeing with gay marriage may not be an enlightened stance, but it was one held by the majority of democrats as recently as 2008. So, to the extent that they are, like most mainstream religions, opposed to homosexuality, it's a huge stretch to relate this shooting to them. |
I'm not a Mormon but I am familiar with their practices. You can lose your temple recommend for fairly minor issues like divorce or failure to tithe. You can be excommunicated for something like porn. However, you would still be allowed to attend church and attempt redemption in most cases. |
I was responding to posts regarding the killer's demeanor at the preliminary hearing. The killer probably seemed drugged and incoherent because he had been beaten senseless on the back of the head by Richard Fierro, a bona fide hero who saved innumerable lives. Hopefully the killer will recover so he may receive justice. (BTW as the parent of a nonbinary adult child, I refuse to indulge the killer's trolling. He, and anyone else who thinks this is funny, can laugh about it all the way to hell.) |
This doughy loser got wrecked.

Oof, that head. Nobody held him as a baby. Explains a lot. |
But he didn’t shoot his father or people like his father. He shot people at a drag show in part because influential people have been saying it is fine target that group. That is what delusional people do. They look for justification to target their hatred. They are scared shitless of people in power so they target innocent soft targets like school children, church ladies, or LGBTQ club patrons. |
