We know his homophobic, meth addicted, porn star dad was relieved to find out his son wasn’t gay when he found out he had shot up a gay bar (he hasn’t been around his dad for years but I don’t think we know about his childhood relationship with his father). We know he belonged to a conservative church although he’s inactive now. We know his grandpa is an extremely conservative politician.

While the investigation of the shooter's motives isn't finished, it is reasonable to assume that shooting up a gay club or a synagogue or any other venue frequented by members of a minority of some kind is motivated by hate. Occam's razor and all.
