The "mainstream" Republicans like McConnell for years stoked the worst racism, nativism and authoritarian elements in US society (which have always been there---whether it be the Know-Nothings, the Confederates, the 1924 immigration reformers, the America First fascist sympathizers) through dog whistles. Then Trump came along and the tiger slipped its leash---now it Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, Lauren Bobert and the like---people who have no interest in governing but a lot of interest in inciting violence---who control the narrative. There are violent lunatics of all political stripes (see, e.g., the Steve Scalise shooting which was done by a Bernie Supporter) but the last 3 years have seen far more political violence fomented by the right. January 6th, the current poll watcher intimidation tactics, the Whitmer kidnapping plot. And the Republicans who do know better are spineless.

Greene has no leadership position or committee assignment snd yet she ranks third amongst Republicsnsxwhen it comes to fundraising. It’s just about money, power and rewarding supporters with tax cuts and corporate socialism.

I read that Pelosi had the hammer, and this guy took it from him. Perhaps it was a small hammer that he was carrying at his age, though even these would be deadly. Or maybe the guy wielded it like a baseball bat.

Ben Sasse - who is retiring and thus can afford to be honest & clear-headed - made the following statement:

"Every single American needs to be lowering the temperature. This is increasingly obvious: Disturbed individuals easily succumb to conspiracy theories and rage — the consequences are bloody and un-American.”

Where is the rest of the GOP? This should be the tone coming from everyone on the Republican side.

I think you will have to await a statement from the medical team. He’s in his 80s and there has to be a concern about swelling and clotting leading to other long term health complications.

Even he, retiring, has to both sides this, huh? I’m mad as hell that the GOP is fascist. I have never once called for, suggested or condoned violence against Republicans. I have never giggled about or made jokes about political violence. I have never voted for or financially supported any candidate who commit stochastic terrorism and I am sick to death of Republicans unable to come to terms with the fact that they are the ones raising the temperature.

Have you read an updated article? All the articles I've seen with details of the attack (not the initial articles) said the attacker tried to tie Pelosi up but Pelosi was able to dial 911 and leave the phone on so the dispatcher could hear what was happening, so police were sent out to check on the situation.
