Common Sense Gun Laws

What do you consider to be “common sense gun reform?”

If enacted, what would “common sense gun laws” look like?

"Common sense" is that we're living in the 21st century and no one needs a tool whose sole purpose is to kill. No guns allowed. Those who need them for work keep them locked up at work when they're not on the job. Anyone found with a gun for any other reason goes to prison for life.

THE ENHANCED BACKGROUND CHECKS ACT OF 2021 (H.R. 1446)
Fixing the dangerous “Charleston Loophole" in background checks

EXPANDING AND STRENGTHENING BRADY BACKGROUND CHECKS (H.R. 8 & S. 529)

THE EXTREME RISK PROTECTION ORDER ACT (H.R. 3480) (S.1819)
Allow for the temporary removal of guns from people in crisis.

THE GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION RESEARCH ACT OF 2019 (H.R. 674 AND S. 184)
Provide funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to study the gun violence epidemic

THE PREVENT FAMILY FIRE ACT OF 2019 (H.R. 4926)
The Prevent Family Fire Act of 2019 embraces a market approach to increasing safe firearm storage by incentivizing retail sales through tax credits.

THE FIREARMS RETAILER CODE OF CONDUCT ACT OF 2021 (H.R. 5678)
The Firearms Retailer Code of Conduct Act establishes requirements for gun dealers to curb the diversion of firearms into the illegal market.

THE EQUAL ACCESS TO JUSTICE FOR VICTIMS OF GUN VIOLENCE ACT
This legislation repeals sections of PLCAA providing more paths to justice for victims and survivors of gun violence.

THE FEDERAL EXTREME RISK PROTECTION ORDER ACT OF 2021 (H.R. 2337)
Extreme risk laws give loved ones and law enforcement an avenue to prevent a person in crisis from harming themselves or others by temporarily removing guns and prohibiting the purchase of firearms.

Very reasonable and will help prevent gun violence/fatalities.

Bump. This is a good general list.

- Pass the Gun Trafficking Prevention legislature which includes enforcement measures at every link in the illegal chain of custody of a trafficked firearm;
- Create comprehensive background checks on all firearm sales, regardless of the venue or type of seller;
- Lift ATF restrictions on oversight and enforcement of gun dealers;
- Increase ATF resources, manpower, and enforcement of current firearm trafficking laws;
- Regulate and track online sales of all firearms;
- Lift restrictions on firearm sale recordkeeping, data access, and reporting;
- Increase federal prosecution of gun trafficking and illegal gun possession offenses;
- Increase federal law enforcement collaboration with local and state law enforcement agencies across regions

And to address gun trafficking here is another list created by LEO.

Timely discussion about how conservatives in the 80s and 90s reframed the 2nd Amendment and then the Heller decision reinterpreted the long-standing view of 2A.

Anyone who claims Scalia is a "textualist" or "originalist" is full of sh#t.

Let people decide on the goal? OK, simpleton, here's the goal: reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban. Fewer assault weapons in circulation means fewer mass shootings. Or are you fine with those?

These are some of the findings by the DOJ on the effectiveness of the ban.

The authors, using a variety of national and local data sources, examined market trends—prices, production, and thefts—for the banned weapons and close substitutes before estimating potential ban effects and theirconsequences.
● The research shows that the ban triggered speculative price increases and ramped-up production of the banned firearms prior to the law’s implementation, followed by a substantial postban drop in prices to levels of previous years.
● Criminal use of the banned guns declined, at least temporarily, after the law went into effect, which suggests that the legal stock of preban assault weapons was, at least for the short term, largely in the hands of collectors and dealers.
● Evidence suggests that the ban may have contributed to a reduction in the gun murder rate and murders of police officers by criminals armed with assault weapons.
The ban has failed to reduce the average number of victims per gun murder incident or multiple gunshot wound victims.

No, I'd just prefer policies that work rather than ones that make people feel like they're doing something.

The number of mass shootings increased dramatically right after the ban ended.

First off, wrong. It was not dramatic. Second, correlation does not equal causation.

But you knew that, and made a false argument anyway.

Common variable is guns - that would indicate causation. The third bullet points that out. Plus, there was a reduction in police deaths.

But you knew all that and you still decided that children dying is okay.

Dems should reframe the narrative and advocate for saving the lives of cops by making these guns illegal no law enforcement officer will have to die at the hands of AR-15s. Support our civil servants!!

If someone was using an excellerant that burned dozens of houses in a minute and teens were getting their hands on this accelerant and burning down neighborhoods. Wouldn't we try to ban that accelerant just like we did some fertilizer used in bombs??! Same for these guns.
