He was traumatized and in a drunken haze, just not functional. Who knows what the story was with his creditors. Maybe he sold his mom's place and paid them off with that. |
I haven’t read the thread b/c I don’t want any spoilers, but I just popped in to say I CRIED LIKE A BABY watching episode 6 last night. So damn well done. I need to take a break and start watching again tomorrow. There was a lot of emotion in that episode. |
If they weren’t overacting so much, I would agree with you. I feel like I’m watching a violent soap. |
Agree, episode 6 was incredible, the best of the series. |
Dubbing makes anything seem a little ridiculous, so yes, it's skewing your perspective. Be a grownup and watch it with subtitles. |
You’re telling someone to be a grown up who doesn’t agree with you. Gross. |
Reminds me of 3%, that was also on Netflix |
Not gross, but a little rude. My apologies. I was coming off of a frustrating conversation with my teenager who thinks reading subtitles are too much work. (While my much younger but more mature other child loves content from everywhere and doesn't think twice about using subtitles.) With the exception of people with a disability or other legit need to watch with dubbing, I think people who don't use subtitles are a little lame, but maybe I should save that opinion for the thread on "things you judge others for." I stand by my assertion that dubbing looks a little silly and thus undermines the emotional integrity of a scene. It reminds me of watching Godzilla movies on Saturdays' Creature Feature when I was a kid. |
I believe it is supposed to be a scathing indictment on the immorality of capitalism gone rogue (like the foreign film Platform) - but I found it depraved and the violence gratuitous …
So far comments here seem to focus on the drama being so good - are Folks thinking about the underlying messages of excessive amounts of money being used in cruel ways to degrade humans who do less well (or have mental illness/ gambling problems) in our competitive society ? |
there is some interesting commentary elsewhere around how Squid Games is a natural conclusion of a hierarchical, rigid capitalist societies that dehumanize people …. Ironically, the actors will make lots of money and fame from this venture - would like to see interviews where they discuss what they learned from being this show ..,, https://www.newsrecord.org/arts_and_entertainment/review-squid-game-is-a-unique-take-on-the-social-repercussions-of-capitalism/article_dab94fd2-270c-11ec-bd38-ef16d5b4bde7.html https://www.vulture.com/article/squid-game-gganbu-marbles-episode-capitalism-analysis.html https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/squid-games-scathing-critique-of-capitalism/ https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/squid-game-social-commentary-andy-pan |
I don’t think we saw Ali get shot either. Can anyone confirm this? |
He was shot and we see him in the coffin. I’m still disappointed in the ending. |
Agree. Ending was disappointing. |
The Korean entertainment agencies have historically made a lot of money, I think it’s great that the actors are actually getting some of it. |
Feels like they are trying to hook you in for a second season. |
