King Abdullah Academy Closing: FCPS Buy for HS?

Yes, search for FCPS boundary maps and then find the split feeder maps - elementary school with middle, elementary with HS, middle with HS. It’s very complicated over there because there is currently a middle - high school mismatch, with one extra MS vs. the number of HS. If you’re in the eastern or most of the middle part of the county where the pyramids are more cut and dry with maybe just some elementary split feeders, it’s a lot more complicated with three way splits in some cases.

There are split feeders and mismatches between the capacities of the middle and high schools in lots of areas, not just western Fairfax.

Kathy Smith would never let that happen!

Bull Run is contiguous to the current Westfield boundaries apart from the small island north of Centre Ridge. Poplar Tree is quite close to Chantilly.

Given Stone’s small size a split feeder MS may be inevitable.

Wow. It’s like the farther west you go, the weirder the boundaries seem to be. The eastern half at least makes some kind of sense.

And yet when they try to make things better you’re going to have parents trying to blow it all up because they think it will make their school “worse” or increase the odds of their getting redistricted to a school they deem unacceptable.

It would also be less than 1900 students, so it would probably pick up more than just the remainder of Bull Run and Cub Run from Centreville and Chantilly.

If they also add in Poplar Tree, that would get their school back up into reasonable numbers territory (@400 more kids) and reduce overcrowding at CHS.

Both Poplar Tree and Bull Run are equally "contiguous" to WFHS boundaries-meaning they are both somewhat related and somewhat unrelated.

There will need to be at least two schools added to Westfield to replace the schools who are likely to be zoned to KAA. Bull Run + Poplar Tree make the most sense as the 2 candidates. Poplar Tree is closer to Westfield than most of the Bull Run zone.

Moving Oak Hill will deal with the overcrowding at Chantilly, thanks.

Sending all of Poplar Tree and all of Bull Run to Westfield to replace McNair/Coates/Floris seems like a reasonable solution. Poplar Tree looks like a shorter drive to Westfield than many neighborhoods zoned there already, and closer than most of the Bull Run neighborhoods that go to Centreville HS now. No logical reason not to move Poplar Tree if you are moving Bull Run.

Well, they won't need to move Oak Hill if they are moving Poplar Tree out.

We need to find more kids for Westfield, Poplar Tree is right next to Westfield, Chantilly is overcrowded, seems like an easy solution.

Sure, like they are just going to leave Chantilly with three feeders and a small piece of Navy.

All you’re doing with this type of suggestion is making a case to abandon the KAA purchase. Is that your goal?

They cannot move Poplar Tree unless they change the elementary boundaries. There are houses at that school that are directly across the street from CHS.

Greenbriar East, Greenbriar West, Oak Hill, Part of Navy, Brookfield, Poplar Tree and Lees Corner all feed to Chantilly. The suggestion to move Poplar Tree leaves Chantilly with 5 1/2 feeders. What's the problem?

There are lots of elementary split feeders everywhere, but if you’re in bounds for say, Edison, South County, West Springfield, Lake Braddock, Woodson … your pyramid is pretty cut and dry with one middle feeding to one HS. This is of course, setting aside the complicated issue of MS AAP not being everywhere.
