I don't understand, why is the suggestion that Poplar Tree be moved to Westfield so outlandish that it would sink a real estate deal? They are right next to each other on the map, and Westfield needs more students. It does look closer than a lot of areas that would still be going to Westfield.
What am I missing? |

It sounds like a lot of areas are right next to KAA. Everyone can't go there! Is GBE, GBW, Brookfield, Lees Corner, and part of Navy not enough kids for CHS? |
Distance. |
No. Some Coates kids go to Herndon. Not a lot. |
Except for a small portion of Coates that goes to Herndon. |
Suggest you go to maps and track the distance from Poplar Tree to Westfield and Poplar Tree to Chantilly. |
Its closer in distance than other areas actually zoned to Westfield. Its closer than some of the Bull Run neighborhoods. If that's the only objection, its not valid. |
Yes, its closer to CHS. So what? Its also one of the most logical choices to go to Westfield. |
Actually, it’s more than you think. 190 students, which is just shy of 20% |
Floris and Oak Hill are the two schools pretty much guaranteed to move to KAA. |
I know Thru doesn’t care, but aren’t there a lot of Chantilly walkers from Poplar Tree? Or do they not cross Stringfellow? |
Here's the elephant in the room. Kathy Smith lives in that neighborhood and purposely played games with the boundaries and used a bunch of poor kids to end up with a school almost entirely well-off. Look at the school profile, its absurd compared to nearby schools. Moving that school zone to Westfield would balance out also moving in a school that is high FARMs (BRES) so Westfield doesn't end up a lot worse off than it started. And if FCPS has to find two schools to switch to Westfield, yes, it absolutely makes the most geographic sense. Anyone with eyes and a map can see that. But the Poplar Tree families will freak out and Kathy Smith will scream. |
No. There are some schools that are not close to any high school. But, Poplar Tree is quite close to Chantilly and some of the neighborhood streets are VERY close. |
That's a long walk at 7 am but its technically possible. |
