Boundary Review Meetings

The updated link for tonight's meeting is here - a neighbor just shared.

Yet another way people are being kept out of this ridiculous rushed series of meetings.

I don’t understand the options - it seems like each of Option 1 and 2 in the page that someone linked upthread has different “sub options?” Like option 1, 7:45-2:30 elementary is bad but 8:10-2:55 is fine. Option 2, elementary 9-3:45 is fine (more or less what most schools have now anyway) but 9:50-4:35 is total ass. How are there 2 options under each option?

Because they don't have enough busses to start every elementary school at exactly the same time. Roughly half are lucky and get the early start times and everyone else gets screwed.

It's not really about luck, it's about programming. AAP centers and various special needs centers (like the deaf and hard of hearing pyramid) will get the late time because buses have to come from all over the county. Regular neighborhood schools will get the earlier times. Everyone should already be able to tell which their school is.

Not all of the AAP centers are late schools.

Dunne update via a new email this morning:

School Boundaries
I believe the revised scenarios (maps) will be published on or about October 10.

FCPS has published the schedule for the community meetings in October. If you care about school boundaries, I strongly recommend that you attend one or more meetings to ensure your voice is heard. These meetings will influence the future of school boundaries in Fairfax County. Your input will shape the options presented to the Superintendent, who will make a final recommendation to the School Board in December.

View the full list of meetings here. Below are the meetings that place in schools where Mount Vernon District students attend:

Wednesday, October 22, 6:30-8 PM, at Hayfield SS
South County and Hayfield Pyramids
Friday, October 24, 6:30–8 PM, at Mount Vernon HS
West Potomac and Mount Vernon Pyramids
Wednesday, October 29, 6:30-8 PM, at Lewis HS
Edison and Lewis Pyramids

In previous rounds, FCPS presented the same content at every meeting. This round is organized by pyramids, so it is unclear whether FCPS will present the same content at every meeting. I hope that FCPS presents pyramid-specific content at each meeting. Either way, you are welcome to attend more than one meeting if you wish. Many parents have done so in previous rounds.

I am providing below links to the recent recommendations made by the Boundary Review Advisory Committee (BRAC) for each region attended by Mount Vernon District students. I encourage you to review what the BRAC is recommending for your schools.

Region 3 (Edison HS, Mount Vernon HS, and West Potomac HS)
Region 4 (South County HS)
Region 6 (Hayfield SS and Lewis HS)

The current plan is for the BRAC to provide input on the revised scenarios before they are published. (This did not happen in May.)

Yeah, Lemon Road has one of the earliest start times (8:15) although the geographic area it covers for AAP is smaller than some elementary schools. Churchill ES has a pretty wide catchment area and it starts at 8:35.

Non-AAP Waples Mill doesn't start until 9:15.

I took it that ES that start 9:20 will move forward 30 min to 9:50

I think it's because ES have staggered times. So some will start at 7:45 a.m. and others at 8:10. Our ES is a 9:20 a.m. start right now and would get pushed 30 minutes to 9:50 a.m.

There absolutely are some AAP centers that start 9:20-can’t name off top head, but if you search old threads on DCuM or go to BoardDocs, they list times by school for all ES in one of the presentations last year

Anonymous wrote:Elementary starting after 9 is ridiculous for all the families with two working parents. You end up on the SACC list for morning and afternoon, and paying for both (plus whatever you can get while you wait on the list). All ES should start by 9.

They don’t even start all by 9 now

For example, Keene Mill starts at 9:15 and White Oaks at 9:20.

Planning on going to one of the upcoming boundary meetings, for those that went was it valuable?
Anonymous
We are an earlier start school 8:40 and we always needed before and after care and our SACC already has a ton of families that need both.

Before care is way harder to find as several places only do afternoons.

One of my neighbors went to one last week and she said it was valuable only because there were so few people there, she was able to talk to staff. There wasn't any new info on the boundaries, though.

The October meeting dates are out and those will have maps to react to … but doing two pyramids is going to disperse the conversation (which I guess is by design)
Anonymous
New maps will not be shown to the public until October 13th.
