Google maps right now has over 7 miles to Oakton a d 3.9 to Carson. 16 vs 12 min in car, not bus from the intersection of Folkstone and Fox Mill. That is just about the closest Crossfield spot to Oakton.. most of Crossfield is much, much closer to Carson. But you know that. Next, you and McDaniel might consider distance to South Lakes. |
|
The answer for Crossfield is that they need to be a split feeder. There are homes closer to Skyview and there are homes closer to Oakton. Unlike Oak Hill, which prioritized staying together vs having some streets walk to Franklin, Crossfield could not reach an agreement that makes either side happy, someone was bound to be hurt.
And Westfield should be picking up students from Centreville, there is no good reason for Centreville to be overcrowded at this point. |
I question less the accuracy of the data and more whether it’s an apt comparison. Middle school is two grades while high school is four. That means there’s a denser population of students to fill a bus more quickly (yes, many high schoolers can drive, but how many formally opt out of bus services for calculating routes?) Second, there are the AAP routes for Navy and Waples Mill that are commingled with Crossfield routes. The Waples Mill buses would wildly inflate the average Crossfield bus times. They should be running comprehensive bus routes for the various scenarios, but nobody seems to ever want to use the software that the transportation team invested in. |
"You can always isolate your kid from all their friends and neighbors" is not the great argument you think it is. |
Your area came out of this situation way ahead. You are zoned to Oakton, one of the highest rated FCPS HS. You can opt into Skyview, a beautiful new school very close by. I'll save my sympathy for the poor kids Seema Dixit deliberately screwed over and the families stuck at the disaster FCPS is choosing to create at Westfield. |
South Lakes needs the extra capacity for future growth. Let’s make arguments based on facts and not emotion. |
The consultants claiming their main goal was to eliminate split feeders is completely disingenous. They created a new split feeder specifically to send a low income area that is walkable to Chantilly over to Westfield, and they didn't fix Bull Run--the most obvious split feeder that clearly should have been sent to Westfield. So its important to fix split feeders, except in the Westfield pyramid? That logic doesn't logic. |
Isn't there more housing going up in Oakton then South Lakes area? |
Westwood Hills is the closest spot. South Lakes is the same distance as Skyview to that neighborhood. The transportation times are likely comparable to those two schools and Oakton. |
agree with this. you are getting what you already chose when you moved in-Oakton. you ALSO are getting an option to attend Skyview if your kid wants to do the specialty classes there. i get that you personally preferred Skyview, but you are still better off then you were before Skyview was purchased. A lot of people are worse off including the kids remaining at SL and Westfield. |
Per Kyle McDaniel and the FCPS staff that looks at those numbers “ It is also worth noting that within the South Lakes HS pyramid, there are over 7,000 housing units proposed or approved which would yield significantly more students into South Lakes HS than the housing units proposed or approved for Oakton HS.” And yes, the AT&T site was included. |
Yes. |
"Proposed" is a big category. Not sure I would include "Proposed" housing in my analyses, personally. I'm honestly surprised there is space in Reston for 7000 apartments? condos?. That area is pretty built out. Where are they going up? |
| I think Seema has a secret plan to zone all the new affordable housing they are trying to build in Centreville HS boundary over to the empty seats at Westfield. |
Or the answer was let them adjust elementary schools. Because some of the areas should not be in the same schools with each other. Then the transportation calculation may have been different and may have made more sense when comparing. But people were too scared to let them make logical boundaries. I currently live 5 minutes walk to an elementary school we are not able to attend. That fcps told us we were not in walking zone for because a 25mile speed limit street can not be crossed safely, with crosswalks and stop signs in place. Yet our current bus stop is on that street and our kids have to cross it to get on and off the bus. lol. They are just not making sense and wasteful of our funds. |
