I have a nagging feeling DC made no progress in language arts this year and I wasn't crazy about the teaching but initially I thought he was the one having issues. Now I'm hearing from other parents in his class that they also feel the teacher in his class just can't teach properly and their kids really struggled this year.
Does anyone know when the SOL scores are made available? Do they send them to your house? We moved here last year close to SOL time and DC apparently high passed but we never got the scores. I'm curious to know how he does this year. |

The schools receive them before the end of the year.
We got them in the mail over the summer. It was either late July or early August. |
| I'm assuming they do not count toward the child's grade. Is that right? |
| I am a teacher at a high school in FCPSnand we have already received our scores. Since they are mostly done via computer, we get the results as soon as the same day. I am sure you could ask his teacher if you are really concerned. |
| Do not worry about the score for your child. They do not have any impact on his or her grades. The SOL will show that your teacher did not teach well if all of the children's scores are low.I know at our school they stressed how important it was for the kids to do well. They sent home study guides and refesher packets. My child was becomming very stressed about the whole situation until I told her the test did not grade her but were a grade for her teacher. I decided that either she would know it or not and we did not do any of the study guides. |

We've always gotten them late in the summer. I'm surprised to hear the schools get them sooner. Why the delay?
This year, we're especially waiting to hear about math, because it determines whether DD takes Algebra next year in 7th. |
So Were AAP 6th graders given both 6th and 7th SOL math or 7th only? Thanks! |
As a teacher, this really frustrates me. Not just the fact that you encouraged your daughter to blow off her review guides, but that you think SOLs are more a test for how "good" a teacher is. I teach 8th grade science, and the science VA SOL in 8th grade tests 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science. I give review packets because these kids are being tested on science they haven't seen for 3 years (and may never have seen it, depending on how high a priority science was in their ES). It is frustrating in the extreme when students do not do them-while we go over them in class, I do not have the time to re-teach 2 additional years worth of science. When kids blow off these reviews, yes, it does affect their overall score, and then parents like you see lower marks, and assume it is the teacher's fault. That is not fair. I realize that not all SOL tests are like the 8th grade science SOL, and if your DD had a decent teacher during the year, yes, she should do fine on an SOL. But it really irks me that you are communicating to your child that not reviewing/doing work requested by the teacher IN ORDER TO HELP PREPARE HER for a test is acceptable-and then you assume when kids do poorly, it is all the teacher's fault. If you think she already knows the material that will be graded, do you still encourage her to do her homework? I would think yes. And OP-yes, the schools already have the SOL scores, but most do not give out the scores for privacy reasons. They are mailed to you in mid-summer. |

HI, yes I can understand where you are coming from ,but I feel when the school is making my child so stressed that she is crying herself to sleep at night saying "what if I don't well on the SOL",that is when enough is enough. I also believe that in 3rd grade after they have been reviewing all day at school that is enough review as well. I do not know about Junior high, but at our school almost the whole month is spent on review. When i told her the test was to grade her teacher and not her she actually cheered up and said well I really like my teacher so I will do my best.
The teachers did not request that we review the packets. They just sent them home as optional. I just decided that my child would benefit much more from having an afternoon out playing with friends then stuck inside doing review. My older dc scored in the 99% with no review so I trust my second dc did just as well. |

Our kids got their SOL scores last week. We told them (if they wanted to know) or else, they would have to wait until the results are mailed to them during the summer. |
| If your child took the SOL on computer, the schools got the scores within a day. If they took it on paper and pencil, then you have to wait until the answer sheet are scanned etc. etc. |
| Just curious if anybody in Ffx Co has received any SOL scores for this year. We have friends in another county who recently received scores in the mail. Thanks. |
FCPS parent here and we have not received them yet (orally or in the mail). According to a similar thread from last year, parents began receiving them in the mail around August 20: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/120068.page |
| Good to know, thanks! |
| OP here. I know a poster mentioned August 20 last year but I was wondering if anyone had received their SOL scores yet? |
