| Also, the reading tests were made much more rigorous this year with more than multiple choice answers, longer passages, more rigorous thought so reading scores have gone down throughout the state according to preliminary reports. |

Scores CAN effect a student for next year. Depending on what grade they are in, many elementary and middle schools use scores to indicate what level of math and reading they will be in the next year. Many students who fail are put in a math and/or reading remediation course to help them play "catch up" because a student who failed last year's SOL will not likely pass a harder test that builds on the previous year's concepts. In HS students have to pass the SOL to receive verified credits towards graduation. A student who repeatedly has failed math and reading SOLs in the lower grades will most likely fail in high school as well.
The cut scores for each SOL are different from subject and grade level (the cut score for Math 6 is not the same as Math 7). In Algebra 1 the cut score is 52%, in Math 6 it was 50%, and in Math 7 it was 64%. The Pass Advanced rate in Algebra was 92% or higher…so you could only miss 4 out of 50 questions in order to get pass advanced. FYI-they can also change the cut scores from year to year. Personally, I feel that many elementary students will try their best because they generally want to please their teacher and parents…even IF they know it doesn't count towards their grade. Since high school SOLs count toward graduation students are pretty motivated. It's middle school where the problem of motivation lies. Many kids already know they don't count for grades and that it all falls on the teacher (no student responsibility). The only thing we have to motivate them is the fact that they will be in a remediation class the following year if they fail. Math was made more rigorous 2 years ago, Reading last year, and Science will be harder this year. Also, the state is changing the way they administer and have students test for SOLs, so keep on the lookout for that (it will affect middle schoolers in math next year). |
You're ridiculous. Without overstating my case: 1. You're telling your kid not to study and then blaming their low scores on my teaching. That's absurd. 2. You're teaching your kid that when the going gets tough, you're just supposed to get a case of the "Whatevs." This makes me respect you less and myself more. |
It's out of 600 points. 400 is 67%. Math.
|
Would you please expand on this statement? Do you mean something beyond the new math standards that were put in place over the last two years? |
You are responding to a post from almost 3 years ago. |
Wrong, and I mean completely wrong, like "read the manual" wrong. The scores are scaled. Receiving a 400 does NOT mean that the student got 67% of the answers right. |

Where do get the information that Science will be harder this year ? Is there a pattern which will be harder every year ? |
| SOL Scores are sent to teacher within 24-48 hours after the test. That depends on teachers decision when to say the results in class.. |
That may be true in YOUR school, but it is not true for all schools. |
| Who is sending scores to teachers? At my school we aren't sent scores. |
Really? The quoted post was dated 05/08/2014, which is this month and this year. |

| Will they tell you during the school year if you fail an SOL? |
