| Knowing what goes on with drinking, bed mingling, etc...I am completely befuddled why anyone would allow their 18 year old to go. Are you allowing your Senior to go to beach week? |
| I don't have a 17/18 year old yet (mine's turning 16), but I went for senior week when I was that age. The kids who were prone to getting in trouble did. The kids who were more responsible didn't get into much trouble at all. Know your kid. Go from there. |
Those kids do it here too. There are groups with no boundaries. |
| I would have allowed it but the group decided not to go. The group falls into the good kid group so we weren't concerned about it. |
I was a "good kid". Truth is that I never got caught at anything I did. I went both my junior and senior year. I was drunk Pretty much the entire time, and it was fun to live with my boyfriend for the week. |
|
I traveled round Europe with one friend when I was 17. I did some slightly bad things, smoking pot, getting drunk etc. but I also had some of the best experiences of my life.
By the age of 17 or 18 my kids are old enough to take responsibility for their own actions, good or bad. |
If you have an 18 yr old, they can do what they want. They are an adult. I was a good kid and went when I graduated. I stayed with my friends who were good kids too. Yes, we did drink but that's what you do during Senior Week. If you child is going away to college in Sept, what do you think they are going to do there? |
|
We didn't. Planned a father-son golf trip so he didn't feel like he was all alone while all his friends were at the beach. DS was not happy but we pretty much said tough.
Drinking, sex and so forth are usually a part of college life. But they aren't the point of college, so hopefully they are side activities to the primary purpose of being there. They are the point of beach week with no other purpose. Sorry, not something this parent is condoning. |
| Is this a tradition for public school and private school students or one more than the other? TIA. |
| When I graduated many years ago, both had the tradition but public schools (MoCo) went to Ocean City and private schools went to Dewey. Curious to see if it's the same. |
| I graduated from public school in VA. We went to Rehobeth. I am sure I spelled that wrong. It was great. I had non-stop sex with my boyfriend. We were with our best friends in the whole world. We had all been accepted into good schools, had worked hard all year, and we partied like it was 1999. |
This is just so, so sad. I went to beach week (a long time ago). I was 17. Lost my virginity. That's called living life. Hope your coddled son had a safe time golfing. Ugh. |
LOL. I was salutatorian at my HS and a Girl Scout Gold Award recipient...accepted on full scholarship to the college of my choice. At my Beach Week, I ate magic mushrooms twice and participated in my first threesome. Sometimes "responsible" means you don't get caught. |
NP here. It's not "so, so sad" to me at all. It's called responsible parenting and having a relationship with your son that mean's something. Being allowed to travel completely unchaperoned somewhere at the age of 17 to get drunk over a period of days and lose your virginity sounds much sadder to me and shows that kids of this age aren't yet as "responsible" as their parents would like to think. It's much easier to say, "Oh, they're going to do it anyway, so I'll let him/her go." |
| I did it when I graduated. If you raised your kid right, you shouldn't have to worry. One girl in my group was slutty, but the rest of us had a great time just hanging out, flirting with guys and doing some drinking (it was 18 for beer then). Fast forward a couple of months and your kid will be doing whatever at college anyway. |
