We didn't. Planned a father-son golf trip so he didn't feel like he was all alone while all his friends were at the beach. DS was not happy but we pretty much said tough. Drinking, sex and so forth are usually a part of college life. But they aren't the point of college, so hopefully they are side activities to the primary purpose of being there. They are the point of beach week with no other purpose. Sorry, not something this parent is condoning.
This is just so, so sad. I went to beach week (a long time ago). I was 17. Lost my virginity. That's called living life. Hope your coddled son had a safe time golfing. Ugh.
NP here. It's not "so, so sad" to me at all. It's called responsible parenting and having a relationship with your son that mean's something. Being allowed to travel completely unchaperoned somewhere at the age of 17 to get drunk over a period of days and lose your virginity sounds much sadder to me and shows that kids of this age aren't yet as "responsible" as their parents would like to think. It's much easier to say, "Oh, they're going to do it anyway, so I'll let him/her go."
