Have they caught the perp? Are they putting plainsclothes on the path? Is this an ongoing problem/problem area?
Apparently there have been other attacks against women in the area, but until a child was attacked, it didn't really make "news." I hadn't heard of the other attacks. It's not clear whether it's the same person, but the descriptions are apparently roughly consistent. I don't know what MCPD has been doing. I had a conversation with my children, who are roughly the same age as the girl who was attacked, about street safety. Their father sat there pretty much silently. I told the kids that when they are out walking, they should be aware of where every other person is in proximity to you, whether they are men/women/children, whether they are getting closer to you or not; you should be aware of any "blind spots" coming up like bushes, trees, a wall that someone could jump out from behind; you should never be within 10 feet of a man you don't know or a blind spot unless there are lots of other people around who could help you. I make these calculations every single minute that I am out walking, as I think most women do if they spend any time at all as pedestrians. My husband, who is tall and athletic and grew up in urban areas, does not ever do this.
