Ugh, so sorry to hear that. It can be so hard, especially when hopes and expectations are high. Hopefully your friend’s son will cone to understand the place doesn’t define the person.

As for profile, DC is well rounded - in top segment of class academically with a balance of artistic, athletic, and activist interests and skills; along with a quiet confidence. Would have been disappointed not to get in but also would have quickly moved to next best options.

4.0/4.93 in an aggressive AP-heavy schedule at a solid public. No score. Lots of ECs but nothing over the top. Extremely committed student. Worries me sometimes.

DP here. I see your point, but the real stories are that donations do wonders. If you don't know anyone in that situation, fine - but it happens more than you think.

Since you seem to know please tell us how often it happens. Not saying it doesn’t happen but even the vaunted Harvard Z list had maybe 60 kids on it

Every single kid at our Big 3 who got into Stanford the past 3 yrs had a major hook. If you don't believe it then you don't know the whole story.

And the three kids at our school who got in had no hooks. So what?

If you’re kid was rejected from Stanford or any other elite school it is solely because they didn’t have a hook.

It is not secret in CA circles exactly what the donor price is for Stanford.

Curious how you know the teacher recs were GLOWING. My daughter is at Holton and they don't share them. I assume they were glowing and she got into her ED but would be curious to see them and wonder if teachers at other schools show them to the students. I have never heard of that happening in the past but maybe it's just our school.
