BOE Fall Plan Meeting

Equity doesn’t mean “the same”. What your middle class NT, straight cis child living in a two parent suburban home needs may look like “back to normal” to you and feel like hell to someone else. There are children who blossomed academically during COL because they weren’t being bullied every day. There are kids with chronic health issues who got stronger because they were more well-rested and less exposed to minor bugs. There were ADHD students who could focus better at home than in a classroom. Why do you hate that they might get the option for DL. You put your kid on hybrid and let others decide for themselves.

Nobody is saying we can’t offer hybrid.

But lots of people (Especially teachers) are saying that they do not want to go back to in person - hybrid or not.

You want the option of DL. Some of us want the option of in person.

MCPs needs to provide both. Not just DL.

It's 100% guaranteed that there will be a remote instruction option for people (like you) who want a remote-instruction option for their kids.

In contrast, it's looking increasingly doubtful that there will be a school option for people who want a school option for their kids.

Yep. This.

Highly unlikely there will even be an in person option for the entire school year. Along with no school sports. Don’t worry, PP. Your wish for DL has been granted.

Sorry, kids. We decided yet again that you're not important. We're hurting ourselves as well as you in the long run, but for right now, we'll tell ourselves that you'll be just fine. After all, you're not dead, and that's good enough, right?

Wow, Smondroski has her own super detailed plan.

Haven't they already considered the possibility of every single thing she is mentioning.

This is nothing new.

Essie McGuire just said that having all elementary students in school would require all the elementary and middle school buildings and some of the high school buildings. That shoots down much of what Somdrowski was proposing.

Wolff now saying that exploring Smondrowski proposal isn't really viable and that exploring this would push back the date of getting decisions out to the the public. "Good or bad, we have to communication decisions."

That doesn't make sense. If MS and HS are doing 100% distance learning, what's the problem with using those buildings for ES kids?

Smondrowski's plan includes no school for MS or HS?

According to dcmom, yes.

The plan wasn't posted before the meeting but her plan was to have ES meet in person FT, I think. The MS and HS buildings would be used so they could have social distancing for ES. At first, it sounded like she was proposing all DL for HS and maybe MS. Later, I thought she said something about MS and HS meeting once every few weeks. I could be mixing up the speakers.

The impression I got from the other board members was that many aspects of Smondrowski's plan had been considered previously. Some are already in the plan. Other board members expressed concern that the longer they take coming up with a plan the less chance there is of pulling everything together in time for fall.

That makes sense to me. Older kids can learn more effectively remotely than younger kids. Older kids can socialize more effectively remotely than younger kids. Older kids seem to be more at risk from the disease and are more likely to spread it than younger kids.

Believe me, I don’t think this is ideal at all, but I definitely understand the rationale of this plan under the circumstances.

Older kids can learn less ineffectively remotely than younger kids. Older kids can develop mental health problems from lack of social contact more effectively than younger kids.

I never said DL was great for older kids. In fact I said the opposite. But, it sound like you agree with me that DL is a bigger problem for younger kids than older, although it is a problem for both.

As for the mental health piece, maybe. Bigger kids can have bigger problems. But bigger kids also have a better understanding of the world and, generally, are able to use greater coping mechanisms because of their greater maturity. Plus, lots of teen interactions these days are electronic, so some of their normal social contact can be maintained. It is a lot harder for a seven year old to text or do a zoom call.

Again, I’m not saying DL is great for older kids, but it is a more viable way to actually provide something approaching an education than it is for younger kids.

Use volunteers and if necessary hire warm bodies to teach in person. Maybe some grocery store workers would jump at the chance?

It’s not a choice if anyone is forced to do it. Jack Smith said no teacher had to teach in person. He needs to stand by that.

Not dead is the starting place for life. Unless a posthumous diploma is good enough for your kid.

Because that's not a recipe for lawsuits when something goes wrong? Not going to happen.

Don’t vote for Trump this time, then.

Are you kidding?

At least Trump wants to get kids back in school. MoCo leadership / the Democrats have abandoned Science and let fear prevail.

Am I kidding? No, I am not. The ony difference between us and countries that aren’t dealing with this now is that this chucklehead is in charge.

Dude. Stop with the Trump thing. This is Montgomery County. The people who disagree with you about schools in Montgomery County, agree with you about Trump.

Not dead is NOT good enough. If we wanted, we could have the kids be (a) not dead (b) receiving an appropriate education. But evidently we don't wanna.
