BOE Fall Plan Meeting

60% of respondents say their child requires transportation

(comment - that's a lot!)

87% of kids have access to individual device, 89% high-speed internet, 93% access to device but might be shared

(next set of details going to fast for me to type. Survey results will be posted.)

You voters got what you voted for on this Board. Enjoy that loss.

I’m both a parent and staff. Before I saw the plan, my kids wanted to return (HS) and I was leaning toward return for myself (MS). The plan is so unattractive that it pushed us towards DL for both our kids and me. The hybrid HS plan is too little in person contact with teachers for the risk. And the 3 week cycle is not going to help facilitate student attendance. For me, I can’t imagine both teaching in person AND online simultaneously. I don’t see it as fair to myself or the students at home. If I could, I would teach all of my regular classes face to face outdoors or in a huge, well-ventilated space. Neither is going to happen. The next best alternative is DL.

We got....kids that need buses? PP’s slow typing speed? Literally no clue what you’re on about.

It's not a lot, considering that about 2/3 of MCPS students get school bus service.

Why does that surprise you? Many parents who want F2F school are going to commute to work and can’t drop off or pick up their children themselves.

I've been assuming that the people who wrote the plan had a goal of pushing people towards the distance-learning option. People, meaning teachers, students, parents, and the BoE. I.e., it's a feature, not a bug.

And the question about the transportation in the survey was not clear.

Typer here - I commented about it being a lot because I think that the transportation logistics are a main driver of the reopening plan, and I was thinking more people would choose to drive.

(and to commenters about my slow typing - GTFOOH)

MoCo Health department Dr. Gayles is having a long piece of commentary. My take-away is that we have to be in MD Phase 3 before schools can go back in-person, and that MoCo has been changing phases slower than the state. There was a lot of reassuring (to me) details of monitoring. Numbers have improved, but aren't at reopening yet.

(and since MoCo is seeing a slight rise right now, if that continues, we aren't reopening in-person IMO.)

In other words, if eat-in restaurants cause an increase in cases, then kids can't go to school. An explicit statement of our priorities, right there.

They just said that for blended instruction, the at-home days will include some synchronous lessons, as well as some asynchronous. I know this has been a big question.

Man nothing says it's really safe for all of us to go back to school like having another meeting on Zoom.
