Yes, stuff like this happens, although luckily nothing super blatant like this has happened to me (I'm a woman, though). However, less dramatic incidents has happened to people I know--for example, my brother tried to make a return at a store and was accused of stealing. That sort of stuff is relatively minor, but the stress effect is cumulative. Anyway, this stuff doesn't surprise us.

Yes. Don't forget she approached him, arm outraised, with her voice raised, while he was asking her to stay back. Don't forget she specified to him that she was going to make a police report specifically including the color of his skin.

NOT "back off, I'm calling the police!" NOT "get away, I'm calling the cops!"

It was approaching him, yelling at him, and saying she was going to call the police about an AA man threatening her.

Black women too. Yes, this type of stuff happens all the time. When I was in high school, I had a tech internship. When my office mate found out I was half Asian she said, “oh that explains it.” This is just on example among hundreds, probably.

The Ramble is the primary bird-viewing spot in Central Park, and he's a birder. Birds will not stay around if there is an unleashed dog, and their primary predators in urban life are pet cats and dogs. He didn't feel threatened. PS: People like to say they have perfect control of their dog off leash, when they do not. I mean, there are some very well-trained dogs, but if this is one of those dogs, he won't come for treats.

But if he will come for treats, he will chase off after other things he finds compelling (like birds) and will root through planted items (which he was reportedly doing).

The treats just prove you don't have the control over your dog that you say you do, and everyone can see it. You cant keep denying it.

By way of example, let me share my teenage son's experience yesterday - he was verbally harassed leaving a park in our neighborhood by some older white men. My husband, who is not white, witnessed this, it seemed totally unprovoked, and he confronted the men. It ended without violence or police, but even the confrontation was shocker since my husband and son are both about the most conflict-averse people I've ever met.

We later learned from my son's friend that other kids they knew had been in an argument with the older men over some recreational equipment at the park. My son spent a few minutes sitting with his friends and they were laughing about the argument. They were sarcastic and probably even mocking. Should the white men have harassed my son when he was leaving the park? No, of course not - he hadn't even had any contact with them. But he wasn't entirely blameless either.

Everyone is a little nuts these days. I think that Central Park woman was wrong and what she did was dangerous. But without seeing what preceded the snippet, I'm hesitant to call for her firing and imprisonment (as many, many people on Twitter already have done.)

Seriously. Where have some of you been?

The irony is that there are so many recent examples of us white ladies calling the cops on black people not following the rules. Now, we have a black man telling a white woman she needs to follow the rules and she calls the cops on him.

But most of us know that black people aren't allowed to grill in the park, fall asleep in their dorm lounge, jog, sleep in their own beds, etc. without risk of being shot.

I did not think it was strange for him to carry treats. I know two different people who keep dog treats in their pockets when they go on walks. They like dogs very much, but don't have them so treats to dogs on walks is what they do. Another friend keeps treats and a leash in her car in case she runs across a stray dog.

All she had to do was leash her dog! Just because is sweet or extremely well behaved does not mean the law does not apply to you. So is mine, but I'm not so special that the laws don't apply to me.

To be, the worst part was the theater show she put on for the 911 call. Did she break any laws by lying in the 911 call?

Interesting that this is your racist takeaway. Her dog should have been leashed. Her refusal to comply and call the police is harassment. It’s come to this. Any black man needs to record interactions white racists.
