You need to work on your comprehension, it says "TJ families who want to save money" not all families. It also means that TJ could likely get into better fancier schools but choose the cheaper in-state alternative. So, no venom whatsoever, like someone else was suggesting. |
Your premise is ridiculous. 37 TJ grads went to UVA last year. Even assuming that every single one of them went to UVA to save money, which is highly, highly unlikely, all 37 aren't even one percent of UVA's entering class. How can you generalize about all of UVA based on this? |
Haha Yes. The average high school GPA of Duke entering students is only a 4.06. The average GPA of entering UVA students is 4.27. |
You cannot compare weighted GPAs across schools as weighting schemes are not standardized. Test scores are a better measure. |
Nope. SAT UVa: 1365 Duke: 1485 ACT: UVa: 31 Duke: 33 Admission rate: UVa: 27.3 percent Duke: 10.8 percent GPA: UVa: 4.27 Duke: 4.08 (THIS SCHOOL DOES NOT OFFICALLY REPORT ITS AVERAGE GPA. This figure is just an estimate) Links https://www.prepscholar.com/sat/s/colleges/UVA-admission-requirements https://www.prepscholar.com/sat/s/colleges/Duke-SAT-scores-GPA Your turn! |
| Um, using your own resource, PrepScholar, Duke's average GPA is reported as a 4.07 (https://www.prepscholar.com/sat/s/colleges/Duke-SAT-scores-GPA) and UVA's is reported as a 4.27, which is exactly what I said. UVA's 75th percentile GPA is a 4.49 |
Read the fine print. Duke didn’t publish its GPA score. 4.08 is just this website’s estimated figure. All other metrics clearly show which school is more selective. |
|
I don't need to read the fine print. All reporting services have Duke's GPA much lower than UVA's.:
College Simply.com. Estimated GPA Requirements & Average GPA AVG. HIGH SCHOOL GPA 3.94* TYPICAL HIGH SCHOOL GRADES A- You will need exceptionally good grades to get into Duke University. The average high school GPA of the admitted freshman class at Duke University was 3.94 on the 4.0 scale indicating that primarily A- students are accepted and ultimately attend. The school ranks #8 in North Carolina for highest average GPA. Given the school's very highly selective admissions, acceptance at Duke extremely difficult and unlikely even with a 3.94 GPA. The school should be considered a reach even if you have a 3.94 GPA. |
| I am sure this has something to do with the weighted or non-weighted GPA. Do you think Duke really ranks #8 in North Carolina? |
You conviniently omitted the following: *This school has not released high school GPA data for its incoming freshmen. In these cases, CollegeSimply employs an artificial intelligence (AI) process to predict GPA based on this school's test scores and a large sample of other colleges' data. 3.94 is an estimate of the school's average incoming freshman GPA. You originally stated higher gpa AND higher test scores are required to get into UVa. Does UVa have higher SAT/ACT scores? |

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia reports the statistics for all four year institutions in the state both public and private every year.
For entering (not accepted - those scores are higher because many Virginians use UVA as a safety against the Ivies) scores of this past fall's class (class of 2023) were GPA: 4.49 (75th percentile); 4.35 median; 4.25 bottom 25th ACT: 34 (75th percentile); 33 median; 30 bottom 25th SAT 1500 (75th percentile): 1430 median; 1340 bottom So a full 25% of the entering UVA class is walking around with a GPA higher than a 4.49; an ACT higher than a 34 and a SAT higher than a 1500. The bottom 25th percentile is usually reserved for athletes, Questbridge, low-income, first-generation, URM, ukulele champion, some internationals, prize winner with lower scores and legacies. |

If you just want to go on reported GPAs in the CDS:
UNC Chapel Hill 4.7 UVA 4.3 UM College Park 4.28 Harvard 4.18 Stanford 3.95 So this shows conclusively that UNC, UVA, and Maryland are more selective than Harvard and Stanford. |
| Don't forget South Carolina where the kids can get up to a 6.0 in a class for honors-AP-double honors-some nonsense. |
PP is correct. This has shifted the irrefutable selectivity ranking as follows: 1) UNC Chapel Hill 4.7 2) Clemson 4.43 3) UVA 4.3 4) UM College Park 4.28 5) South Carolina 4.21 6) Harvard 4.18 7) Stanford 3.95 8) Princeton 3.90 |
Don't forget Florida!: 1) UNC Chapel Hill 4.7 2) Clemson 4.43 3) Florida 4.42 4) UVA 4.3 5) UM College Park 4.28 6) South Carolina 4.21 7) Harvard 4.18 8) Stanford 3.95 9) Princeton 3.90 |
