Until the main players go test-optional, it’s just a sham. How many of the top 100 colleges are test optional? |
The irony. I can’t. |
My kids have had the worst proctor for their tests. One had the kids start the wrong section - it wasn’t until the students said something that it was corrected...10 minutes later. One didn’t even check IDs. One had the tables configured too close to each other. (That made me nervous that the test would be invalidated. It was not) Just a sample of fun times of SAT/ACT testing. |
The schools that good students want to go to will always ‘require the tests’. The schools that are test optional are mostly schools whose enrollment is starting to flag abd who are in danger of going out of business. |
Yes, a jump like this through prep can surely happen. Retaking the test, for free, is the clearest way to confirm the score. You only have to score within 100 points of the flagged score for ETS to keep the higher score. And, according to their website, they will never tell any colleges that the score was flagged, even if a student were to admit to cheating. A student who admits to cheating can retake the test as many times as they wish to pay for, and colleges will never know from College Board that the young person had admitted to cheating. A test prep company has an article online that gives advice about how to handle a flagged score. They estimate that about 2500 scores are flagged each year, with about 1000 of those being confirmed in the end for the test taker. Not everyone who gets the letter follows the process, so the numbers of confirmed test scores could be higher. Some people just want to move on and they retake on their own, so they wouldn't be included in the confirmed numbers. (These numbers are not from ETS, but are estimates put together by a test prep company that sees a lot of test takers and sometimes has to help clients with big jumps in test scores that get flagged.) |
Exactly. So they take in tons of money and don’t require a suitable testing environment. That is actually worth fighting. |

The CSS profile, also run by the College Board and used by students to apply for Financial Aid and scholarships at private universities, is another example of a very poor product being provided and REQUIRED at a high cost. You have to pay to send it to each individual university (of course!) which means hundreds of dollars a year for them per student and the software is terrible. It’s as if they haven’t upgraded the software since the early 80’s. You can’t even save what you have entered and go back later and edit or finish the work and submit it . Nope - you can only save it and then that’s all you can do.
I hadn’t finished what I was entering but I saved my work to go back and edit it later and found that I could not. It was set in stone and as it was based on my child’s SS number I couldn’t even start over with a new account. Nope - I had to cross out any errors and write in any new information and fax it all to the colleges myself, in addition to sending the wrong form to the colleges first at my expense. I learned this after being on the phone with the college board for hours (mostly hold time). And yet they sell your kids’ information and profit from it. That they can do. But providecdecent software to use? No can do. Somehow you can edit the federal FAFSA form as my times as you want before submitting it, but not the CSS profile provided by the College Board. The College Board only exists to profit off of students who want to attend a university. |

Princeton doesn’t require the CSS profile but instead has their own free form. I hope that other colleges start doing that too.
Maybe instead of being ‘test optional’ more colleges could have their own in-house tests too. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSS_Profile |
Apparently better than you understand what “none” means. |
I read this exchange and PP, you are objectively an imbecile. Most of the people who objected in this thread tied the issue to the race of the student, conjuring up some phantom racism. |
|
Funny how so many in this thread are SURE there was no racism here and describe evidence of her cheating as “strong” when literally NO evidence has come out. We need a question administered before people can be ruled qualified to post in this thread:
Which is not evidence: (a) your opinion (b) anecdotes you pulled out of your ass (c) anonymous posts online (d) all of the above |
Her dream is to attend Florida State, not U of Florida. |
Funny how many posters are certain there is a racial motivation absent any supporting facts. It’s helpful if you remember that in this country we presume innocence, not guilt.....see how that works? |
| It sounds like she cheated by copying answers from someone nearby. The computers detected a similar answer pattern and she was flagged. If she studied and was able to make a 300 point increase, she should be able to score a similar score upon retaking the test. I’m guessing that she knows she wouldn’t be able to get the same score again and has turned to the media to avoid retaking the test. |
