| Per a column in the WP today, the County is also already contorting itself to to find a name for the new MS at the Stratford/HB Woodlawn building. |
I don't really care why the kids don't like it. They are the ones who have to live with it and should have some say, beyond a small group of students who were on the selection committee. Put it to a vote of the student body with the top 2 choices -- Washington-Loving or Washington-Liberty. |
The Washington loving genitals. What teenager wouldn’t be proud to call that school their own? |
Have you had a frank discussion With your kid about the history of Hall’s Hill and it’s recent gentrification? Have you discussed what happened in the last boundary process when that area was zoned out? Have you talked about what is happening in Nauck right now? |
That. Is. Awesome!!!! 10 points for Yorktown. |
I really hope the SB becomes aware of this and comes to their senses. We can admire and honor the Lovings without subjecting an entire school population to this kind of mocking. |

I followed the Stuart-to-Justice name change.
When Justice was selected, there was some major carping. Some said "Justice" was too vague a concept to name a school after. Others said it would be mocked because there's a clothing store for tweens with that name. Still others claimed it would conjure up Sheriff Buford T. Justice from "Smokey and the Bandit." We're now about half-way into the new school year, and most of the kids have really embraced the new name and "Wolves" mascot. So take the parade of horribles with a grain of salt. But if you're really convinced "Washington-Loving" isn't the right name, don't stop reaching out to the School Board members who'll make the final decision, no matter how cynical you might be about their motives or whether they'll listen to what you have to say. |
I mean they don't like it now. In a few years they won't be at the school. In a few more the name will be normal and not new and strange and no one will care. And in a few more they will realize how meaningless HS (and what it is named) is. |
Not to mention how much this actually disrespects the Lovings. |
+1 |
Yes. Although I'm not sure why you needed to specify "frank" as the sort of discussion we'd have about Hall's Hill gentrification. |
That proves too much. If the name is meaningless, why change it, much less to a new one that everyone knows will invite ridicule for at least the next several years. |
I didn't say a name wasn't important. I said HS isn't and in a few years the name will just be the norm. VA is for lovers anyway. So to be clear. Who we chose to honor with schools or buildings is important and says a lot about our character as a community but I am not going to worry about kids mocking other kids because the people their school is named after have the laat name Loving instead of Smith. |
Uh, yes, you did. If you want to walk it back now, that's a different issue. But I do agree it says a lot about our character as a community if a small group of hand-picked advocates can ram a name that many find less than optimal down everyone else's throats. |
+1 And by PP's logic, those students won't be at the school in a few years (or even next year?) anyway so why should their preference override the opinion of the student body as a whole? The committee has done their work and came up with two top names. Now put it to a vote and everyone can live with the outcome. |
