If the family went along with a feature film, it’s hard to see them objecting to a school name. Although Washington-Loving is a really, really odd pairing of names. Is the APS school board that tone-deaf? Would they still be the Generals even though the Lovings weren’t military figures? |
I can hear the football chants now. Well, my W-L kids don't generally go to football games and now they really won't want to. |
yes. asked and answered. |

I am surprised people are so passionate about this issue. I am glad the school is being renamed because I don't think Lee should be honored. But after that, I do not care.
Folks will survive HS if it is named Washington-Loving and it will be offensive to no one. I don't think the students of Loving HS of Loving, NM are constantly mocked. |
| Harriet Tubman was the most honorable person on the list. Hopefully that’s the name they go with. |
| Have they polled the entire school community or all the students? “Washington-Loving” is so lame. |
No. This is my biggest issue with it. To the PP who wonders why people care so much, I care because my kids is upset about it. I really didn't think I'd care. I have no issue with changing the name. But, to my kid and, from what he says, many, many other kids really hate this name. It feels like a small group of students who have an agenda to be as PC as possible are pushing in this name without any input from the student body at large. Now, maybe my kid is wrong and it's just his group that thinks its dumb. If they poll the school and the majority approves of it, then great. We can think it sounds weird but they are the ones that have to go to school under it, chant it at the football games, write it on their college applications. What also has irked me about the discussion the last couple days is that those who think the name is just great! are 100% unable to concede that there might be anything the least bit problematic about it, that there could be any reason one would laugh at the name. Really? Are you that tone deaf? Have you never met teenagers? Also, opposing this particular name is conflated with opposing the name change in general. You can support getting rid of Lee and still hate this name. |
+1000. You can just see a few students ready to take credit for this name on their college apps. But most of the kids hate it and it will not age well. |
Ding Ding Ding! |
Really? Really??? This is why you think students here won't be mocked if the name is changed to Washington-Loving? Of course the name Loving HS in Loving, MN makes sense. That's like having Arlington HS, in Arlington, VA. The Lovings have nothing to do with Arlington. |
Of course not, because every kid in and around that town grows up with the name and sees and hears it everywhere, to the point where it loses all meaning. I don’t care too much, especially since my kids won’t go to that school, but this name is already being mocked, it is strongly disliked by many, and it’s not too late to go with something else. |
I guess I really do not care if kids mock a HS name? Like I Honestly can't believe this is something that people are worried about. Folks are worried that another school will mock them during a football game? Like this is a legit concern of people? I thought mocking other schools during football games was par for the course? |
Great! My kids will go to W-L and know who the Lovings were and why they matter. (And if the marching band plays those iconic "I'm Loving It" notes when W-L scores, that's fine.) |
| Heard Yorktown kids are already calling them the W-L “Genitals.” This won’t be pretty. |
