Jeez. You all really don’t get it.

I just want this part of my ethnic background acknowledged. The fact that you are all hating on it so much proves my point. You refuse to let me say this is part of my genetic background.

It doesn’t mean someone who isn’t Ashkenazi is less Jewish; it simply means there is a genetic ethnic group that is Jewish.

Why is that so hard for you all to accept? It’s people like you who made me feel I had to fight for this acknowledgement. You all want to claim this ethnicity is fake, or caring about it is indicative of a belief in some sort of racial purity. It’s really offensive.

What? Who do you want acknowledgment from??? This is confusing to me. I wasn’t aware that Ashkenazi Jewish people were lacking in being acknowledged as Jewish. meanwhile, Jews of Color are constantly fighting for acknowledgement and recognition that they are as “Jewish” as Jews descended from Europe.

I am truly confused by who your audience is.

My audience is everyone here who says recognizing that there is a genetic ethnic group that is Jewish is indicative of a desire for racial purity.

This thread proves why this is necessary. So many people think there is no ethnic component to being Jewish. There are religious, cultural, and ethnic components. Of course you can be a religious Jew from any ethnic background, but people want to deny the existence of a Jewish ethnic group.

As a descendant of people who were exterminated, I would like to be able to acknowledge my ethnic background without being called names.

Im Hindu Indian married to an Ashkenazi Jew. We are vaguely following aspects of both religions, but arguably neither. Our kids see themselves as both. That is a threat to the OP and other religious nationalists who see the mixing of religions and cultures as a threat. Also, to complicate matters, I am an atheist and dont give one fig about it.

hinjews and chinjews (zuckerberg's kids) are going to be the supereme rulers of the future. when you combine the smartest races - watch out!

whereas the Jewirish may just combine the worst elements of both ethnicities -- loud arguing, grudges, overtalking, red hair, boozing, and maternal guilt.

KIDDING!!!

Irish American here - you made me laugh!!

Sorry to break it to you, but race is the wrong term.
You are homo sapiens, races are white, black, red and yellow. People from India are part of white race group.
Combination of races are mulato and mestito

Do not take this too seriously and do not confuse it with religion.

It’s ethnicity. Ashkenazi Jews are an ethnicity.

You are descended from Ashkenazi Jews. You ARE NOT Jewish. You do not get to call yourself "Jewish" based on ancestry. It's a religion. Anyone who goes around calling themselves "part Jewish" or "Jewish" will be assumed to be claiming some religious background or identity, not a genetic one.

Even people who convert as adults will say "born Jewish," and not claim to still be Jews. Actually, I take that back. The one example I can think of is Judge Roy Moore's "Jewish" friend Martin Wishnatsky, the one he "takes fellowship" with, and who is a Messianic Jew, e.g., a Christian: http://time.com/5089113/roy-moore-jewish-attorney-practicing-christian-martin-wishnatsky/

To claim, as your post title does, that "Jews are a racial group" takes religious belief entirely out of the definition, and that is ridiculous, and, yes, a talking point for neo-Nazis.
Anonymous
Then I retract the title.

Being Jewish can have a genetic component. It doesn’t have to, but it can. If you have Ashkenazi Jewish or Sephardic Jewish background, you are Jewish. If you convert and don’t have that background, you are Jewish.

Happy now?

No. If you convert, you are not Jewish. There is no Jewish without Judaism or at least not being anything else. You were descended from Jews, or born Jewish, or raised Jewish, or you have Jewish ancestors. You, however, are not Jewish, anymore than you remain American if you give up your citizenship and become Canadian.

If you give up your citizenship and become a citizen of Canada, then you are Canadian

OP craves attention and so wants to be able to identify as a holocaust descendant. That’s all this is. She needs to find her own reason to be interesting.

BTW, most American jews are just white.

Agreed.

Your statement doesn’t even make sense. Are you saying that the ashkenazi and Sephardim are separate racial groups? You realize that there are Jews who fit into neither category?
Are Muslims a race? Hindus?

Just stop.

I don’t know about Muslims or Hindus, but yes — Sephardic and Ashkenazi Jews (as well as some others) are considered racial groups. I had the Ashkenazi Jew genetic screening panel done when I was pregnant. My 23 and me results say “50% Ashkenazi Jewish.”

You don’t know what you’re talking about.

Aren't you supposed to be a bit smarter?
Anonymous
This thread is dumb. Just give OP a cookie so she goes away.

And I know quite a few Jews with red hair.

My 23and me results say I am 2% irish, so are the Irish a racial group?

Very true and funny. Mom of Hinjews here! I am waiting for them to show their genius in classical music, spelling bees, scrabble or tennis. Still smart, but not quite genius level. Lol!
