Caucasian Female who was married to an Asian male for 10 years - yes some white people suck THAT bad, and worse.

Asians are racist against asians from various "other" backgrounds and also other minorities. SOME people in general really suck that badly (of all races) but most are good.

Signed
Asian

The problem is when the racist people have control over jobs, schools, housing. Saying all people are racists minimizes systematic and institutionalized racism.

Astrid was amazingly beautiful. Wow.

Not unrealistic for a hoity hoity place.

Yes it is. It’s not like they were in overalls chewing on straw. On what planet would there be a stereotype that Asians couldn’t possibly be rich?

You need to get out more. There are many places like that even now. And there were more in 1995.

Asian from a "poor" rich Asian family (not on their scale, but still rich).

I get out plenty. This scene was completely unrealistic. It was just another attempt to make a dig at evil whitey.

I actually enjoyed the movie outside of that scene.

Europe is really racist and classist. Far more than in the US.

Absolutely true.

I thought this was a fun movie, but not superb or anything. I would have liked it better if the mother had actually apologized to Rachel at the end. She really owed her a big apology.

Really? Are you a troll?

It is called Crazy Rich Asians. It is about an extremely wealthy Asian family set in Hong Kong. What minoritiescwould fit in?

Singapore, not HK.

This is the first book of a trilogy. It's not supposed to be all wrapped up into a neat little bow at the end.

Asian American male here:

I just read a bunch of reviews about how it "reinforces stereotypes" and a bunch of "cultural appropriation" comments. The reviews were all from white males.

So it's hard to get over that it's 2018 and people feel that way. still not keeping me from seeing it.

It's always liberal white people who take it upon themselves to denounce anything they feel smacks of "reinforcing stereotypes." They do this all the time, even if the actual minorities in question have no issues with it. Incredibly tiresome.

Um...sequel.

And besides, MILs never apologize to DILs then live happily every after

They said the last time they had an all Asian cast was the Jot Luck Club, which I saw. I also saw Eat Drink Man Woman. Wasn't that an all Asian cast. I think it was a 1990s movie by And Lee. How about the Wedding Banquet. Its just that using media to promote the current movie is in its favor.

No, you're wrong. Crazy Rich Asians is the first movie put out by a Hollywood studio to feature an All Asian cast since the Joy Luck Club. You're talking about other films that were not issued by Hollywood (ex: Wedding Banquet is a Taiwanese movie).

I think that would've gone too far. I think she definately deserved it, but it would be OOC if Eleanor did a big apology, I think the message of Nick using her ring was perfect and more would've been hanging a lampshade on it.

The book does a better job of showing how multiethnic, multiracial Singapore is. The movie hints at it (the guards at Nick’s family home, some faces in the crowds at the night market, the older deaf women in the mah jong scene).

Saw it last night and the theater was packed. Enjoyable movie.

The more I think about it, the more I wish the director/producer would have chosen the Netflix route for this movie. I completely understand why they chose to have it made by a Hollywood Studio but I think they would have had a better product if they went the Netflix route.

Making this movie in a similar way to Big Little Lies would have enabled them to delve deeper into the different characters (Astrid, Eddie, some others I'm forgetting). With a Hollywood movie, they had to cut too much out. I read the book years ago so forget most of it but I do remember there was just so much more in the books. If they could turn it into a limited series (a la Big Little Lies), they could have devoted time to those smaller stories that really added to the book but had to be left out of a 2 hour movie.

It's too superficial for me. I tried to read the book at Barnes and Noble but I couldn't get into it. I don't watch a ton of TV and the last thing I want to watch is a crazy rich family. I don't care what race they are.

This was one of the few movies where I wish I had seen the movie before reading the book. I loved the book but I was distracted in the movie because it I knew what was going to happen for the most part but was distracted when they changed a few things.... I wish I had gone into the movie without any prior knowledge
