We need strong principals and administrators. There are so many kids who want to learn and have the capability to learn and be successful. We need to teach them. I know it's a movie, but I've worked under strong principals like this one; and it can make such a difference in the lives of those students who are trying to learn but are thwarted and put in fear by some of their classmates who spend their time trying to intimidate others.

It's misleading to say the prior administration "prioritized violent criminals, including gangs." The Obama administration obstructed the arrest and deportation of illegal aliens, even known gang members, so "prioritize" is not the right word. More like "limited to only violent criminals." You're also confusing federal immigration enforcement with local police officers, and you're implying that resources are so limited that ICE can only focus on one or the other. They're capable of handling MS-13 and your run of the mill illegal migrant worker. As they should.

Are they? Because clearly they werent under the Obama administration. I’m a moderate-conservative but think we need to be doubling down on MS-13 and other criminals and less time on showboat raids. Get to the heart of the organization. See the forest through the trees and focus on things that will make us all safer. My brother is a cop (also a conservative) in another city and is worried about the direction things are going. Immigrant communities are becoming less likely to reports crimes or work with the police. That is certainly counterproductive to taking out gangs.

My H is a homicide detective and things were improved under Obama administration. ICE worked directly with homicide and deportations were easy and orderly.

It's a mess now, witnesses are afraid to talk, ICE is too busy to assist the cops. ICE is bottom of the barrel when it comes to skilled law enforcement.

This. Under Obama, victims and witnesses of violent crimes could be assured that their immigration status would not be investigated if they came forward. That has changed. So now victims and witnesses cannot cooperate with law enforcement, for fear of deportation right back to places utterly controlled by the same gang. Moreover, Trump's decision to end TPS for Salvadorans and others means that people who HAD legal status are now largely going to go underground. So, whereas three years ago a Salvadoran with TPS could safely approach police to cooperate in an investigation, that will no longer be the case.

Basically, the Obama administration had to make some choices - either prosecute MS-13 OR terrorize undocumented immigrants more broadly. They chose the first.

Perhaps we're now trying to get to the root of the problem, which will naturally fix the MS-13 component of the problem.

Yup we gotta kick them ALL out. It’s the only way. Cut off the recruits and MS13 will starve to death. But we need a republican super-majority to make it happen.

MCPS spends more time trying to squash any bad PR about gangs in its school than it does trying to get them out. The central office puts pressure on principals who then put pressure on teachers to keep reports low. The Blair principal freaked out when there was a news article a fews back about a fight in the school that was factual. She didn't like the bad PR. The incident that occurred behind Einstein is treated by MCPS as nothing since it was not on the property just a few feet away. The incident near Rockville was not communicated for the same reason.

This approach is only putting students in harms way by creating an environment that tolerates and unintentionally protects the gangs. Gangs want to make money in the criminal activities and be able to recruit younger members - MS and ES. They don't want attention. MCPS is basically encouraging them by trying to hide these issues so MCPS doesn't look bad. The apologists that claim white students in schools with gangs are fine because the gangs leave them alone are the worst. Its not safe for the white kids to be around gangs and its even more dangerous for the latino and AA kids who deserve a chance to finish school without being forced into a gang.

I'm 18:03 illegal immigrants are not necessarily or even likely to be in MS-13. They do get targeted by these gangs once they are here because they are a more vulnerable population. MS13 in schools also prefers legal immigrants with family members back home. This way they don't lose recruits to ICE and they can pressure the family that is here.

I don't agree with Trump/Sessions policies on the border and think that their actions are simply providing theatrics for their rabid base while its lessoning the focus on getting the actual MS-13 members. I also don't agree with Montgomery County and MCPS letting gangs flourish in schools because they want to look good. The far extremes of either party are a disaster in terms of outcomes because they are simply creating a show.

Can someone give me a balanced reason why school administrators [everywhere] don't seem to care who attends the schools they run? Is it hyper-political correctness? Do they only care about the bottom line, ergo more revenue via inflating headcount by any means necessary? Or do their own kids rarely attend the district they run, so they just don't care?

I suspect it's about inflating revenue, with top priority of keeping pensions funded, but I'm really not sure. You see this exact same type of posture in public school administration everywhere.

The Obama Administration is directly for the resurgence in MS-13 violence and the sorry state of our public schools in Arlington and FCPS, as well as it sounds like, in MD. School performances took a nose dive at the same time that Obama settled DACA kids by the thousands in the area. That, coupled with the described complete lack of immigration law enforcement, brings us to where we are today.

Trump cannot fix this mess fast enough.

This is the more important statistic........

Over a 10-year period (2005-2014) ICE arrested approximately 4,000 MS-13 members, leaders, and associates. This represents about 13 percent of all gang members they arrested nationwide (31,000) during that period.
92 percent of the MS-13 affiliated aliens arrested were illegal aliens. Of those, 16 percent had entered illegally at least twice.
