I did not mean to imply that her being a vile racist is OK. I just meant that people like Roseanne are so blinded by their beliefs and hatred that they really aren't thinking straight; like a mental block of some sort. EVERYONE has some kind of prejudice but most people are smart enough to know that publicly revealing those have consequences. I mean... how deep is her level of hate and venom that she just don't care about the people that are close to her and the people who relied on her for employment. She had NO regard for the consequences. You can't change people and you can't make them believe something that they don't believe. However, what ABC did to her should be a BIG deterrent for people like Roseanne; hateful people who have the power to employ hundreds. |
Thanks for a thoughtful take. I also think that people see Trump pull this cr*p and his base loves him and there are no consequences. And Fox “News” hosts who do the sa,r thing, take a week of vacation, and come back with no real consequences. So they feel emboldened to do the same thing. And I agree with you. It is hard to tell how much Roseann (or Trump) believes this cr*p, and how much they are doing it for ratings. This stuff plays well with the Trump base. I suspect she doesn’t believe but does think it burnishes her creeds with Trump’s base. She seriously miscalculated here. I am not a black women. But I am glad Wanda Sykes forced the issue and a black woman fired her. Poetic justice. |
| Roseann was a loose cannon. It was only a matter of time. ABC screwed up big time when they did not include in her contract that all social media postings were subject to some sort of review. |
If ABC applied this logic then her show should have never been given the green light. ABC knew what they were getting when they signed her up again. They thought that she would tone it down but she dug in and forced their hand. I don't think that ABC is some kind of here here... with major Show Runners like Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy and others inking deals with Netflix, ABC knows that they aren't the only game in town anymore and show runners will pull their content and go elsewhere. The decision to cancel Roseanne was 80% business and 20% moral. IMHO. |
But this is often the thing about us not-racist white people. It just takes the right stimulus to unleash some of the worst of human behavior (whether we are talking about racism or anything else). Right now this country is experiencing a frenzy of backlash to the Obama presidency, BLM, etc. White people who feel like the Roseanne you described are becoming angrier and angrier about being lumped in with racists, about the entire nation being portrayed as racist, etc. And their anger is leading them to lash out in hateful ways. Roseanne was never the most mentally stable (no excuse) and give her a couple of pills, a Trump presidency, a soapbox and a bad attitude and this is what you get. If anything the Trumpkins are now even MORE pissed off because Roseanne made one *joke* that in their opinion wasn't even that bad and she gets fired, but the ladies from the View get to talk smack about Trump and no one fires them. People who considered themselves "not racist" and now support Trump and/or Roseanne just see themselves as being unfairly blamed and victimized and they can't be logical about it. |

| 10:09 and 10:11 illustrate what I was saying in my earlier post. Many Trump supporters don’t distinguish between racism and insults based on political differences. They see no difference between an insult based on race which has centuries of dehumanization behind it and an insult based on political differences. They just consider them equal. |
It's like how all Black people are lazy and want handouts because of the select few that they show on the news during some kind of tragedy. All whites are labeled as racist. All Black people are labeled as lazy, deadbeats. All muslims are terrorists. On and on. Sorry non-racist white people, but you don't win the gold for shouldering an unfair burden. It happens to the best of us. |
People who are not racists do not support racists. |
You have very liberal/rational analysis of a person with very reprehensible character. When you watched her a long time ago, that was show. Roseanne in twitter is what she IS. A while ago racists/vile people were suppressing their racist feelings because saying it loud was impolite. Now with twitter and trump, they feel they can do whatever and would not face repercussion. People are what they are, they do not change because they become celebrity or have a microphone. People like Rosanne are not the thoughtful/caring people who would care about their workers or colleagues. If she was a thinking/rationale person, she would not be feeling/saying racist things. Look at Trump. He was always this vile - presidency has not made him any gentler. Many thought presidency would change him because with the role, comes great responsibilities. Those people were wrong - he has become more, more reprehensible each day. Bad people with power are worse than their powerless self. They damage everyone who depend on them and everything they touch. |
They consider them equal because "Black people need to get over racism" and "slavery ended years ago". They will never see the dehumanization behind their comments because they didn't personally enslave a Black person. It's a vicious cycle that will keep perpetuating itself until there is acceptance... acceptance of the fact that people like Roseanne can believe and say whatever they want. The consequences just have to be deeper, more harsh and result in significant loss (personal financial, physical) for them to "get it". |

Yes, of course. But white privilege means making a big stink when it's YOU who are the victim. And frowning upon others making a big stink about, you know, BBQing whilst black. |
This has to be the best trolling! I like Dictionary.com's trolling too. |
This! Comedians can insult people and make fun of them to get a laugh but that is totally different than the completely racist comment Rosanne made. |
