What boomers have is endless time because of retirement and huge wealth from real estate appreciationbb hard to beat that so we need to be savvy

Well then, maybe I could interest them in holding on to their immense real estate wealth before it evaporates due to crap schools. Or not -- because my experience with local seniors (including my own parents) is that they don't really look down the road too far and are convinced by the rantings of Fox News hosts.

I was wondering about this group--what is their makeup? What is their position on schools? Do we need to start lobbying them? I know nothing about them except they were handing out Gutschall flyers at the caucus which irritated me.

I think it's great you want get involved, but there are decades of entrenched interests you'd be fighting.
You're against affordable housing? You are obviously racist.
You want to give land to the schools? Why? Most people don't have kids in school. The schools get more than their fair share.

No one runs against affordable housing. And huge capital projects aren't popular re: streetcar.

Good luck to you.

I'm against affordable housing because of overcrowding issues -- we can't even educate existing kids in our county, let alone other kids that would be brought in with additional affordable housing. If that's racist, so be it. Why would no one run against affordable housing when this untenable situation exists? Anyway, this is all probably pie in the sky as you point out.

I'm pretty sure that MONA could turn out a bigger contingent of voters as compared to those Boomers -- we just have to give them something to vote for.

MONA forbids political posts. You can't advocate for positions there, but you can advertise events, such as a meet-and-greet with a candidate. I remember seeing one of those events posted for Monique, and she went on to win the SB dem caucus, so...

Can the discussion about the overcrowding and planned night school and mega school be posted? And a recommendation to look at candidate platforms and remember to vote? No explicit endorsements but bring the horse to water

If worded carefully, yes, I believe so. I know that MONA has hosted a speaker on the topic of school crowding before.

I often post to our civic association, which is also officially apolitical. My email might say that the SB is voting on X issue, and anyone who wants to provide input should send an email to Y, and if you have any questions feel free to contact me. Anyone who contacts me separately gets my own views, but the original email that is sent to the whole neighborhood is strictly informational.

I think you should absolutely run. I care about all of the issues you're talking about and wish I had the time/energy/motivation to get involved. PLEASE do it for me -- I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I'd vote for you too, but if you ran against AH, you might not even be able to run as a Dem. In this county, that's a death knell.

I'm totally with you on AH: while I'm generally in favor, it has to be in a responsible way that makes sure it doesn't overwhelm existing institutions. Similarly, the SFH development should be checked as well. I live on one of the many, many split lots that used to be one home for a retired person and now is two homes full of children (3 for me, 2 for my next door neighbor). I'm not trying to pull the rope ladder up behind me, but a call for planning and foresight could certainly be construed as such. My husband and I are both liberals and registered Dems, and I can't even talk to him on this subject because his liberal sensitivities, god love him, push him to support as much AH as will fit because poor people have a right to live here too. The PP is right that you would be up against entrenched interests, and trying to woo voters whose "team" is telling them to support what you will be opposing.

AH in Arlington is a money maker for way too many people.

Developers, advocates... whenever someone writes an editorial on Arlnow promoting AH, if you look them up, you'll see they've got a hand in the till. They also are unlikely to live anywhere near it, and don't send their own children to school with the unwashed masses.

This is exactly the issue I have with AH!

The problem is we are parents with jobs and kids competing against professional advocates for whom AH is a money grab and their death to day job

I feel like overcrowding is a sort of code word.
