| Anyone watch? I was unable to last night due to dinner guests. Tried watching live stream but link disappeared after last night when it wa SD too late to start watching once dinner guest arrived. Did the sb vote on hybrid option? Did the ASFS parents go ape sh#t again ( sorrry, live in N. Arlington and think they are so ridiculous). Any updates apppreciated. TIA. |
I was only able to tune in starting at 8:30, so I missed the comments the SB made. When I tuned in, it was already public comment time in high school seats, and most of the people were advocating for a 4th comprehensive high school at the Career Ctr. Lots of Arlington Heights folks spoke--I was very impressed with them. Most who spoke were against hybrid option. Dr. Murphy seemed very stressed/annoyed last night. You could see it in his face and his voice. I don't see the video available for watching yet, but when it is, I'll watch the first 90 minutes. |

This is PP again--one other thing is that a couple people spoke in support of Reid's diversity provision, which I enjoyed, because I'm sure it made Tannia/Lander/NVD squirm. Or maybe not--maybe they are immune from squirming.
Also, there was a lady there who was batsh*t crazy. She seemed to be known to the board b/c when she tried to jump in during public comment on the high school seats, NVD shot her down & said it wasn't time yet (speakers on non-agenda items come after speakers on agenda items). When the lady finally spoke, she described murders with coverups by the police and fire depts, said she didn't feel safe & addressed the crowd asking if they thought their children were safe. I have no clue what she was talking about, but she is obviously a nut. |

The hybrid option appears to my untrained eye to be a horrible option. In addition to the obvious facilities issues (parking? playground? fields?), what exactly are they going to teach those children at that location? Traditional HS? Specialty program? I honestly do not get it.
I'm on the same listserv as the Arlington Heights folks though different neighborhood, and I understand that a lot of people were planning to go and speak. Glad it seems like they acquitted themselves well. Obviously everything in this county eventually boils down to NIMBY, but this hybrid thing really does seem poorly thought out and just a way to placate the WL parents. |
| Could someone link if not too much trouble? I'd be interested in watching. |

I thought the Arlington Heights folks made a really good point about being afraid that if we blew this $150M on two short-term high schools, we likely wouldn't have enough money left afterwards to start building the comprehensive high school that we really need, and that we should use the money now to do that.
I had been in favor of a 4th comprehensive at Kenmore, but the Arlington Heights folks have convinced me that they are right and we should try to build it there. Their more central location should be better for the project, anyway. The only thing is that they don't really have open fields or a pool and I agree with them that they would need (expensive) underground parking -- I want a TRUE, equal 4th comprehensive high school so spend all the money there and do it right. Maybe Arlington Tech could be moved to the Ed Center? |
Right, space is the issue with the site. I don't see how it wouldn't be a "less than" school based on size of the site alone. I personally went to a HS without its own pool or football field (we didn't even have a team) and am no worse off for it, but it does seem a bit unfair. But, as compared to the hybrid option, I'd get on board. I was supportive of Kenmore as the best option as well, but seems like that's just not going to happen. |
| The county could toss in the money for the pool. If Arl. Heights wants the 4th comprehensive HS, give it to them. It's very rare that a community ASKS for a school. |
| Can anyone estimate the FARMS level if we built it there? That's what cooled me off the Kenmore option, but would Arlington Heights be any lower? |
|
| You can't build a 4th HS that is not comprehensive- you will be just shafting S Arlington- oh wait guess that's the plan! |
| I too was so impressed with the Arlington Heights speakers. These are the kind of people I want as my neighbors. I was originally supporting Kenmore, but now I have been convinced by their arguments. Put it at the Career Ctr. |

The arlington heights folks will do anything to avoid Wakefield. If the 4th goes there it could potentially have a lower farms rate than WL. Of course they are all for it.
All this says to me is that most people really think Wakefield is a shitty school and would do just about anything to avoid it. That includes not having a comparaable facility. I'm sure the school board will be happy enough to accommodate them. We are currently zoned Wakefield and looking at the map, it's 50/50 whether or not we got rezoned to the new school. If this is the decision, it will tank Wakefield's scores. I really thought Wakefield would improve over time. I'm such a chump. We plan to list if this is the decision. Fuck this county. |
You can definitely do a comprehensive school there that incorporates Arlington Tech -- 1300 neighborhood seats plus 800 AT seats would be similar in size to the other 3 HSs. Take over the Patrick Henry part of the lot, build the school up rather than out, and I'd think there'd be room for fields. AT can't easily be moved -- it is at the CC to take advantage of the labs already there like engineering, automotive, animal science, greenhouses. I don't think people realize how extensive that facility already is. |
