I'm not a woman so my opinion is jaded somewhat, but I would guess that the reason there isn't as much resentment and/or protest about male privilege is because there is a sizable segment of the female community who aren't outraged by it. I think there are a lot of women who may not necessarily openly acknowledge that the prefer men have more advantages in life, they consciously or subconsciously accept traditional gender roles and the privileges that come with being a man. Many women believe that men are supposed to make more money. Many women believe men are supposed to have more authority. Many women believe men are supposed to be the warriors and rulers and women are supposed to be the nurturers and subordinates. There is nowhere near the same level of acceptance with regard to traditional/stereotypical roles when it comes to white privilege. There is no sizable segment of minorities who aren't outraged by the fact that they get treated unfairly because of their skin color. You would be hard pressed to find people of color that believe whites are supposed to make more money and whites are supposed to have more authority. You'd be hard pressed to find any people of color that believe whites are supposed to get the benefit of the doubt and be respected as individuals while people of color are supposed to be regarded with suspicion and not seen as individuals. |
But we are NOT talking about Asian Privilege. I'm hearing all this talk about White Privilege, and BLAMING it for various shortcomings of blacks, so naturally I'd use whites- to-blacks for the comparison. Your insistence that we use a different race (Asians ) when making points about whites doesn't make sense, unless it is to make the put-down that whites are mediocre (which you did quite obviously). |
No, the reason is the ANTI-Minority tone and speech by the republican party. Trump really made it worse by directly appealing to the racists. Asians are also mostly social liberals, so the GOP abortion politics doesn't help. They are affected by taxes BUT wealthy and upper middle class Asians are fine with paying a slightly higher tax rate for better social facilities to take care of the poor. |
It's often been said that the Republicans like the lower-class immigrants for the cheap labor, and the Democrats like them die their (eventual) votes. I tend to believe that. |
| "Die" should be "for" - weird auto-correct. |
You're a fucking idiot. Any African American in this country who feels pity for him/herself b/c all eyes are on him/her in Macy's has NOTHING over some person in a refugee camp. And I'm sorry, but there are plenty of working class whites who will be viewed as being outsiders in MANY white areas. It's SES. again - You are a fucking moron. That is all. |
| Great example OP. True anecdote - my white refugee raised insanely poor (stuff of novels) Aunt did not get the same scholarship that her Puerto Rican "Hispanic" (European heritage) husband received who was from a wealthy and privileged background received. I guess they looked different. |
| Can we discuss black privilege? There are parts of DC, Chicago, Atlanta, New Orleans power structure where it could be very difficult to get a job as a non AA. |
Agree. Why does it always seem that blacks are in contest with who has it worse, and they always want to be acknowledged as the "winner"? Because it's an excuse to avoid taking at least SOME responsibility for their own failings. Whitey is getting sick of it! |
But asian immigrants are mostly legal and highly educated and make lots of money. So they should be welcomed right, instead why are whites resentful about model minority immigrants? Are they feeling threatened that their position as the top dog will be usurped by them? |
Most white people are not upset about immigrants who work hard and don't ask for preferences. In fact, aren't Asians the ones getting shafted by race weighted admissions because their kids are overrepresented and schools are limiting their slots? |

"If you can convince the lowest white man that he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll even empty his pockets for you." - Lyndon Johnson
LBJ got it right and the GOP has been picking the poor white man's pocket ever since. The poor white man figured as much and got angry and wanted to root out the GOP establishment. But when they decided to vote for Trump they jumped into the fire from the frying pan. Trump won't leave a single cent in their pocket BUT he has given them hispanics and blacks to look down on. |
The cities you mentioned may have a greater influx of minorities in state and local government positions but those same cities also have some of the greatest disparities in wealth and affordable housing which results in densely overpopulated areas of those economically challenged which fosters environments for high crime which provides justification for law enforcement agencies to engage in discriminatory practices such as racial profiling... So in a nutshell while some blacks may benefit in terms of employment in cities like DC, Chicago, Atlanta, and New Orleans they still are more likely to feel the effects of racism in those very same cities. |
This is the GOP and Trump Strategy. It has worked out so well for decades.
|
But a significant portion of the historic power structure in those cities is AA. So why are they not correcting this? The black "upper class" exists. Go to DC, go to Marthas Vineyard, got to Atlanta, go to Chicago, go to New Orleans. |
