The way you raise your kids and the beliefs and attitudes they hold influences their actions. Not all kids are having sex early and it isn't just a crapshoot as to which kids are having sex early. It depends on the beliefs and attitudes your kids have towards sex and being sexually active, same as using drugs, drinking, and other actions.
If you have raised your kids with the beliefs that sex is fun and kids like to have fun so kids are going to have sex as some posters on here have said, then yeah, your kids are likely going to be sexually active early. I also think the posters with this attitude might change their minds when their kids are 12 or 13 and realize - that fun or not, these kids are too young to be out having sex and dealing with the responsibilities that come with it. |
I agree with you. Parents have tremendous influence over our kids' morals and attitudes. However, an important element is open, honest communication. Also, we have to be mindful of the behavior we're modeling for our kids. If a parent smokes, its hypocritical to just say "don't smoke". If parents are drinking in excess regularly, it will come across as hypocritical when they tell their kids "don't drink". If you're an aggressive, distracted driver, it will have less impact when you say "be a safe driver". My kids are 16 and 14 and we think both are too young to be sexually active yet. But I'm not naive to think that just saying "I forbid this" will be enough. We expect our kids to be independent, mature, and make decisions for themselves. There comes a point in time when they will decide for themselves if they are going to be sexually active regardless of what I want them to do. |

I remember hearing about blow job rings and was shocked how many middle schoolers are "into" those things.
If kids have too much time on their hands and parents just think so is life, it will happen. |
| My cousin had a baby at age 12. She's 30 now. |
I taught HS in MCPS for a number of years. Most of the girls rumored to be pregnant never gave birth. While some of them had abortions or miscarried, I suspect most were just the victim of rumors or bullying. "Julie" throws up or gains 5 lbs, she must be pregnant. Even as a teacher, I constantly heard rumors that I was pregnant. Teen births do sideline a lot of Latinas in MCPS, but they aren't the only ones having sex. Just the ones who don't have/use good BC. White and black girls seem more likely to abort if they get pregnant. I haven't had a single student give a baby up for adoption although this happened frequently when I was in college and almost all of my friends who have adopted babies received newborns from high school age moms. |
What middle school boy discusses this with their aunt or uncle? I teach MS. My boy students would commit hari kari before talking about sex with an adult relative. |
|
My grandfather took my then 13y old father to a brothel to have his first intercourse with a prostitute. I think if I had been a boy, my father would have done the same for me….
My husband lost his virginity at 12 with a 14y old girl during a train trip. |
I'm sorry. |
| Teach your kids about birth control. Shit happens. |
|
I once was watching someone's baby near Chevy Chase/Bethesda and a group of middle schoolers were gossiping about who was/wasn't sexually active and parties with alcohol.
They also called another boy who walked into the place where I was sitting a "faggot", quite loudly. |
You realize that this doesn't mean that those people actually are sexually active, right? |
That whoosh you hear was the point flying right over your head. |
Then what was the point? That middle schoolers gossip about people having sex? That shouldn't come as news to anybody. |
Why not teach your kids some ethics, like keeping their clothes on? Unless of course, they're actually shitting. |
I didn't realize that wearing clothes is a matter of ethics. Or are you referring to abstinence? Here are the possibilities, if you teach your child about abstinence only. 1. They are abstinent. 2. They are not abstinent, and they don't know anything about birth control. What happens to non-abstinent people who know nothing about birth control? |
