Malaysia Airlines Flight Goes Missing En Route to China

Two days, the Air France crash from Brazil, it took days to find bits of the plane.

Another dumb question: how do we know the plane crashed/disintegrated rather than was hijacked to another location? Is there a way to block radar from knowing where the plane is? I mean, I assume it blew up and/or crashed....

I thought about this (very unlikely but possible) scenario as well.

The transponder can be turned off, which was done by the 9/11 hijackers. However, radar still picks up the echo off of the structure of the plane, called the "primary target" or "skin paint" -- but it doesn't identify the aircraft as the transponder does.

(The point of stealth aircraft is to minimize the reflection of the metal back to the radar receiver).

It took 5 days to locate air france debris. The cockpit voice recorders were found 2 years later!

There are also reports now that 5 additional passengers checked in but never boarded the flight. The airline says their luggage was removed, but who knows if that is the truth.

This is definitely becoming more and more interesting as details are released. The poor passengers and families.

In that instance the plane hit the water intact, which made for much larger pieces to find. Still not an easy task in the ocean, but the clues at the surface were much bigger. Of course, we have no idea what happened yet to this craft.

This is an interesting theory. Wouldnt it be crazy if the passengers showed up safe and were being held for ransom. Kind of like those
Pirates who are highjacking ships off the coast of somalia and demanding money.

Yes, but someone would see an airplane being landed somewhere. It is impossible to hide or secrete an aircraft. And, passengers on the plane have cell phones or ways to communicate even if they took the air pirates were to take the phones. Someone would have kept theirs and tried to get a distress call out. The whole situation is just bizarre. Although the Value Jet plane that went down years ago into the Everglades left some telltale signs although the plane was never recovered.

This is so sad for the families. Won't there be at least some debris in the general area of where the plane is thought to have gone down?

There should be, but given how fast planes travel and the possibility that it went off course, the "general area" possibilities are enormous.

This happens in every single airport, every single day, and is so so so common, for almost always very benign reasons.

How remote is the area? Even off course wouldn't debris be seen by now?

Why would a terrorist book a connection on a plane they are going to blow up?

Duh--to conceal the fact the plan to blow up the first leg.

That makes zero sense. "Oh, this guy looks shifty but hey he booked through to another destination, so he must be OK." If airlines were this stupid, every terrorist in the world would book round trips.

Do you think airlines aren't stupid? You have too much faith.

Also, one-way vs round trip tickets is something that is looked at when determining who to flag for possible terrorism concerns.

Then by your logic, a connecting flight is evidence against, not for, an attack.

Well-yes--which is why if your intentions were bad you would book a connection.

Ah, I didn't realize it was so common.

I heard on the news that the area they are searching is as large as Pennsylvania.
