The saddest song of all time

A Man needs a Maid- Neil Young

Agree--an amazing song, despite the title, which is misleading. Young's "Needle and the Damage Done" is also very sad.

"Do They Know It's Christmas"

(Paul Young)
It's Christmas time
There's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time
We let in light and we banish shade

(Boy George)
And in our world of plenty
We can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
At Christmas time

(George Michael)
But say a prayer
Pray for the other ones
At Christmas time it's hard

(Simon LeBon)
But when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window
(Sting) And it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is
(Bono joins in)
The bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that are ringing
Are clanging chimes of doom
(Bono only) Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you.

(Everyone)
And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time.
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life
Where nothing ever grows
No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time
Feed the world
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

(Paul Young)
Here's to you
raise a glass for everyone
Here's to them
underneath that burning sun
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?

Chorus (Everyone)
Feed the world
Feed the world
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again

Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again

Actually, I cringe every time I listen the lyrics of this song---I think it's pretty insulting to many Africans, who, while they may be poor, DO know what Christmas is. Also, Bono's line about being glad it's them and not us makes me cringe too---I'm a little surprised that he was willing to sing that line.

Sweet Lorraine

Lyrics
Sweet Lorraine the fiery haired brown eyed schemer
Who came from a long line of drinkers and dreamers
Who knew that sunshine don't hold up to dark
Whose businesses fail, who sleep in the park

Lorraine who spoke of paintings in Paris
And outlandish things to her family just to scare us
Whose heart went pokin' where it shouldn't ought
Whose mother could only spit at the thought of
Lorraine, sweet Lorraine

Her father would tear out like a page of the Bible
Then he'd burn down the house to announce his arrival
Her mother was working and never was home
Lorraine carved out a little life of her own

Lorraine started working, Lorraine went to school
Her mother threw stones at her on the day that she moved
Now isn't that a very strange thing to do
For someone who never really wanted you
Lorraine, sweet Lorraine

Her daddy called her a slut and a whore
On the night before her wedding day
Very next morning at the church
Her daddy gave Lorraine away, Lorraine away
Lorraine, sweet Lorraine

In the battle of time in the battle of will
It's only hope and your heart that gets killed
And it gets harder and harder Lorraine, to believe in magic
When what came before you is so very tragic
Lorraine, sweet Lorraine

It's a line meant to shame us, the listeners.

I agree. It's stunningly tragic. Every American should listen to that song, and to her.

The Greatest by Cat Power. Wow... her haunting voice, and the lyrics, are so depressing.

Maybe Sparrow by Neko Case. What a lovely voice she has. And the song, about a little bird who is killed, always brings tears to my eyes.

Particularly poignant if you were poor/had divorced parents

So many of their songs are sad and beautiful.

Verdi's Requiem is pretty damned sad. But its not a song. Does it count?

Sylvia Plath by Ryan Adams. I don't even know all the lyrics but I know her story which is sad, and he always sounds like he's crying when he sings.

I think you missed the point. It's hard to "know it's Christmas" when your days are no different and there is Jack Shit under the tree that you don't have.

That song is cringeworthy.
