I can't believe no one has mentioned Sandy Denny's "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" It was covered and made popular by Judy Collins.

I agree with those who nominated "tears in heaven" by Clapton. What could be sadder than the death of a child?

Jolene by Parton is a pretty good "also ran". I also feel melancholy (but not crying-sad) listening to "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac. "Space Oddity" by Bowie makes me melancholy as well.
