This is part of the reason why we are where we are as a nation and as a society. Unless it affects people directly, people just don’t care. We’ve lost our empathy. Our humanity. Our collective responsibility to help be the voice of the voiceless.

Agree. I feel like people are finally beginning to come out of the ridiculous state of constant outrage they were in during the last administration. We now see a lot of appropriate push back and rolling of eyes regarding the things you list. Glad common sense has begun seeping in again.

DP. You realize that people are laid off ALL THE TIME in private industry, right? They don't expect to be exempt from lay offs for the rest of their lives.

You do realize working for the federal government is different than private industry? You do realize that the federal government largely has programs designed to help people whereas private companies make profits. Government agencies serve the people. Federal workers run programs that help citizens. What happened in the federal space was not a well organized layoff. It was a tech oligarch coming in and randomly firing people. There was zero thought put into the firings, which has complicated things for the people left. I’m so tired of people comparing private industry and the government without knowledge of why and how government works.

+1 I know people who were laid off who are in charge of critical aspects of medical and environmental safety. You'll be first in line wondering why the government didn't protect you when you accidentally get hurt from a medical device and when your water is filled with contaminants.

+2 Or asking where Grandma's social security check is since they downsized the staffing at the SSA. Even Fox News is pointing out that Trump's cuts have caused the agency to suffer its worst staffing cuts in 90-year history

Objectively, there are many people in this area meaningfully less happy because of losing their Fed jobs, or fearing being deported, which makes sense. These two categories have absolutely valid reasons to be a lot less happy than others. For everyone else chugging along, what other categories of people would have legitimate hardships under this administration they didn't have already during Covid disaster and Biden's runaway train?

I guess it's a special kind of privilege to not be a Fed (or care about a Fed) or be worried about deportation or about being detained by ICE due to your having the same skin color as someone deportable. Not all of us enjoy this privilege.

It’s worse for those waiting to get their case for social security disability heard before an ALJ. The ALJs are leaving in droves and not easily replaced, but the claims have grown exponentially. The higher ups have recently informed ALJs that they are now mandatorily required to hear and issue rulings in 600 cases a year, regardless of vacation and holidays. That’s drudgery work for those without options. Those with experience are retiring or packing their belongings and moving across the street to law firms that practice against SSA.
