Is anyone else meaningfully less happy living here since Trump 2.0 started?

"If they were following the law, they woukd have came to the United States legally"

When ICE is pulling people out of actual courthouses for their immigration appointments they are targeting the people who by definition ARE going through the legal process, legally.

Also, "would have came" is laughably dumb English, it's the type of of grammar only someone remarkably uneducated would use.

Plus, I have to explain to my kids that while the President of the United States and the Republican party think it's fine to say things like "shut up Piggy" and call people and our allies juvenile names, that we expect better from them as human beings.

my group of coworkers have been fighting layoffs from H1Bs for past decade.

and we would have thought Democrats would help us but Democrats made it worse! Biden expanded H1B helping corporations fire us and replace us with cheap H1Bs.

and H1B being limited, some of my friends have been contacted about development jobs. progress, how ever little.

Biden sacrificed college-educated Americans on the alter of H1B holders. At least T-rump is trying to right this wrong.

Oh please, this is laughable. He's doing no such thing. He's throwing you some crumbs and you're hungrily eating them up, even though they're too small for a mouse.

I will take a crumb any day rather than being sh!t on by democrats

This has to be a foreign troll.

If they are in the courtroom for removal proceedings, they either entered illegally or they overstayed their visa (which is also an illegal act and a violation of trust).

Neither is “following the law.”

No, they literally pulled people out who were about to be sworn in as citizens

Other than in your mind, how has Trump affected you? Honestly.

I hate trump, but he has no tangible impact on my life.

Do you live around here, or have friends or neighbors? It’s hard to believe you, if you do.
I guess if things are fine for you, great. But don’t you care about what others are going through?

I don’t know about you, but even though things somewhat ok for me (in spite of 3 hours daily commute since so-called RTO that has been pretty rough on my family) and I have a job and a lot of financial security, and I can afford to buy Christmas presents and send my kid to college, I feel less happy knowing I have neighbors who have lost their jobs, people losing their homes, had their livelihoods destroyed through no fault of their own, or who fear deportation even if they have literally done nothing wrong and followed the law to a T.

This area definitely has a different feel now. It is sad and subdued. If you aren’t noticing any changes, lucky you I guess.

People are being targeted for their skin color regardless if they’re here legally or not. Are you not aware that this is happening?

I am not aware, please post your personal examples you observed or experienced this year.

You are not educated and you only follow MAGA propaganda news. Sad.

Exactly. The people they pulled out followed the law meticulously. Their only crime was being from a country the president decided after the fact was too “third world.”

Clearly you are not a fed. Or a person with a brain or heart.

DP. You realize that people are laid off ALL THE TIME in private industry, right? They don't expect to be exempt from lay offs for the rest of their lives.

+1 I know people who were laid off who are in charge of critical aspects of medical and environmental safety. You'll be first in line wondering why the government didn't protect you when you accidentally get hurt from a medical device and when your water is filled with contaminants.

You do realize working for the federal government is different than private industry? You do realize that the federal government largely has programs designed to help people whereas private companies make profits. Government agencies serve the people. Federal workers run programs that help citizens. What happened in the federal space was not a well organized layoff. It was a tech oligarch coming in and randomly firing people. There was zero thought put into the firings, which has complicated things for the people left. I’m so tired of people comparing private industry and the government without knowledge of why and how government works.

+2 Or asking where Grandma's social security check is since they downsized the staffing at the SSA. Even Fox News is pointing out that Trump's cuts have caused the agency to suffer its worst staffing cuts in 90-year history

I am meaningfully less happy since as a professor I'm getting really worried about the possibility of informants in my class, the possibility that some student will decide to go the college president and attempt to have me fired. I have to teach a class on US foreign policy next semester and I am absolutely dreading it. Last year was the first time I had students say overtly racist things in class, overly sexist class, quote podcasts by Nick Fuentes, had the president of our local Turning Point USA chapter in my class. It's hard to contain the chaos and I struggle with when to intervene now when students disagree in class because while normally I would shut down a lot of things, nowadays I'm worried that if I do so I will be accused of censorship.

Even if what you said is true, why disincentivize people showing up to court for their hearings? I understand the cruelty is the point for you people, but you understand that this doesn't even make strategic sense, right?

These are the people showing up, attempting to get right with the law. Shouldn't ICE be focusing their efforts on the people who aren't doing that? Snatching people from the courthouse only makes people less likely to actually show up to the courthouse.

Are you able to establish classroom behavior expectations and rules for debate at the beginning of the semester? That way you have something you can point back to if you end up having to enforce your policies?

I'm sorry that you're dealing with this. I don't think the answer is allowing racist statements in class, as that creates a hostile environment for your students of color who deserve to feel safe in their classrooms.

DP. Have you been living under a rock? Seriously. Anybody who remotely keeps up with news knows this. Yes, Trump is pushing people underground with his policies. Why is he doing this? Because it was never about illegal immigration. It's about racism that doesn't tolerate brown people going about their lives in this country. They (quite abhorrently!) want white utopia and this is one way to achieve it.

I understand that Trump and his ilk want that. I was speaking to MAGA pp, who seems concerned with people following the law, even though this practice very clearly disincentivizes these people from working within the legal system. Sometimes you have to help the MAGA morons see that the dots don't connect following their nonsensical logic.

This is part of the reason why we are where we are as a nation and as a society. Unless it affects people directly, people just don’t care. We’ve lost our empathy. Our humanity. Our collective responsibility to help be the voice of the voiceless.

It’s disgusting and very, very sad.
