| No, the part that's hard to understand is "why should there be cuts on swim team?" as opposed to the far more reasonable, "my kid would have liked to be on the swim team, and I'm a bit sad for him that he didn't have the cut times." |

In order for there to be no cuts, Fairfax County would need to provide a full pool for every team to use. Right now, they split a pool with another school and are given a max of 4-5 lanes. APS gives their swim & dive teams full use of the facility during practice time, which is 8-10 lanes + a separate dive well.
FCPS - most teams have cuts down to 25-35 boy and girl swimmers if demand exceeds those numbers. Most teams don’t cut anyone willing to be on dive team. APS - swim & dive are no cut sports (as long as the kid is safe in the water) |
There should be cuts because if everybody made the team, everybody would get 15 minutes of practice twice a week. The supply (lanes) exceeds the demand (kids that want to swim in a lane). |
+1. 3-5 lanes? at the recenter where my kid practices, it's more like 3 lanes max. There's a basic capacity issue. I'd also argue that even without pool capacity issues, a roster ceiling makes sense. Some one else can do the math, but i don't think it's worth any one's time if you're lane filling 1 event a meet. |
