Cuts for Making HS Team

Anonymous
Are there cuts for making the swim team? DD is 8th grade but heard that some of her 9th grade club friends did not or are unsure if they will make the team -they're spread across Oakton and Chantilly HS. I know that they can't take anyone but these are kids that have swum club for many years so a bit surprising.

Woodson has cuts too allegedly --- where would these be posted?

Have a swimmer on a HS team and she is saying that no one makes it who doesn't have at least a 1:10 in 100 free (women's). Not sure how accurate that is.

Madison will be cutting this year. Heard they had 40+ girls for 30 slots. And, it looks some club kids are getting cut.

For my kid's school it's 1:02. And yes, there will be cuts to get down to 30 girls, and yes some kids who swim club will be cut.

Have your kid email the coach and tell them they are an 8th grader who wants to be on the team next year and ask what the cut time are and if the coach has any advice on what they should be doing in the next year before high school swim.

You HAVE to know this is scholl/team specific right?

Not to mention that I doubt there are explicit cut times? There are a finite number of spots, which will go to the fastest kids. The times may naturally hover around the same times annually.
Most FCPS high schools near me cut swimmers, including club swimmers. There’s only one team (no JV) and it’s highly competitive.

Having 40+ girls at Madison tryouts is pretty normal. Even with some cuts, there were 39 girls on the team last year and 34-35 the year before. “Cut” times are based performance at tryouts. Historically it’s been the top 20 freestylers plus the top few in each stroke event from the remaining swimmers who make it. So basically the times needed change every year (although FWIW the talk used to be girls should aim for a sub-30 50 free to be “safe”).

1:02? Is this a local school - that seems very fast.

No cuts at our FCPS HS.

FCPS HS with no cuts, unless you count swimming 200m a requirement to be a cut.

+1 that this is going to be a very school specific thing.

I think Oakton and Chantilly are two of the harder swim teams to make. Anywhere with a higher SES is going to have a lot of club swimmers. So then you not only have to be a club swimmer to make the team, but a pretty good one. We know kids who are good club and summer league swimmers who did not make their HS team. I imagine at a lower SES school with fewer club swimmers it would be easy to make the team.

What is SES?

Good 10 and 11 year olds are swimming that fast so it doesn't seem like an unreasonable cut for high schoolers to me.
