What about all the smart American students that could have filled those spots and benefitted from a Harvard education and benefitted the economy. I don't think anyone is saying no international students but we need to put American students first.

If they can compete with the rest of the student body, the American students will get in. But my experience as an American with two Ivy degrees is that the international students were often the smartest in their classes. Losing that talent brings down American education as a whole.

Maybe this will inspire the US to improve the quality of our own HS graduates. Why aren’t we able to compete?

There are a lot of us democrats here who think US colleges and universities have gone too far with international admissions. Reign it back a smidge. Not to 0, that's draconian. But 3-6% seems right?
The politics behind this issue are not worth democrats fighting. Its a losing PR battle.

States could potentially dictate this for their public universities but the federal government has no business dictating this to private universities.
