Mater dei

If this forum is one of your principal sources of information, I can see why. It just takes a few disgruntled frequent posters to reflexively repeat the same points and people get that impression. These same few posters also don't like the exuberant cheering of the MD parents at games charactering them as "arrogant" and "obnoxious".

As a sports fan myself, I understand the impulse. For example, why should the Yankees and Dodgers be allowed to have payrolls like they have?

In our neighborhood, where there are a lot of MD and Landon families, I hear the complaint from both sides.

Where do they build the first grade class from? Boys who are finishing first grade at parochial skills but just repeat it at MD?

Why do they care so much about excelling at sports? I understand the value in sports for exercise and learning about teamwork etc. but who cares about winning at middle school sports? So few will be college athletes or beyond. So why care about it beyond just the experience… to the point of holding kids back academically

Seems like you have some difficulty understanding why people think differently than you do.

There was a group of Mater dei boys at Cottillion and they were the worst-behaved kids in the group. Openly defiant to any adult direction.

So they were high-spirited and not docile?

Who else had to google Cottillion.

MD grads have had a track record of discipline problems at both GP and GZ.

They don't require it.

They might recommend it.

Ned Williams, the former headmaster, who had a Doctorate from Harvard in Education, believed that being older had academic and social benefits for boys.

It also has huge benefits for the boys in athletics, which is the reason why many MD families reclass their boys. The school historically is very permissive there too.

I heard they won't admit kids who are May-Aug birthdays unless they reclass. May just be rumor though

They don't call it Mater Delay for nothing.

Oh wow is this true? My son has played a team from Mater Dei in basketball through City of Rockville, which goes by grade level (elementary school age) a couple of times and we were joking the kids looked two years older than any other team. So maybe they actually are? I wonder if they realize they are ridiculous putting kids a year against an 8 year old, or whatever.

That’s the Heights.

Look …they produce Supreme Court pedigree.

Can any current MD parents speak to the behavior of the students? Redshirting?
