Facts

Like what? Be a good guy is the motto

You are kidding right?

"be a good guy"

Mater Dei is a cult is OPUS DEI "be a good guy" is not in that doctrine.

That’s the Heights.

Look …they produce Supreme Court pedigree.

Can any current MD parents speak to the behavior of the students? Redshirting?

Look at the behavior in public. That boy got bludgeoned in that silver spring middle and the schools did nothing about it. Don’t hear anything even close to that at this school or others like it

And you never hear anyone say they regret re-classing their kid. In fact, you only hear positive.

You don’t hear people saying they wished they peaked their kid ahead in this tough world

I graduated from high school at 17 1/4. I didn’t make that same mistake with my kids.

But is 18 and 10 months better than 17 and 10 months?

MD’s age range for lower school is usually 6-8mo delayed from traditional public

So if the boy has a spring birthday they might suggest a hold back to repeat 1st. There are maybe 30-40% of kids who do not repeat and come straight from Kindergarten. Not exactly sure because it’s something that isn’t at the forefront of conversations- especially after the first year. But it did seem to me that there were plenty of K to 1 boys who didn’t repeat and we usually the Fall birthdays. Meaning 7yo for most/all of 1st at MD.

What’s the story for boys admitted in 5-6th? Are most (at least spring/summer/maybe beyond) held back?

Pretty sure they admit kids who already completed 5th grade into their 5th grade class for sport reasons.

Many educators believe older boys do better academically, socially and yes, athletically, in middle school and on through high school.

It doesn't please the parents on the opposite sidelines, as these threads about Mater Dei consistently demonstrate.

My two sons played on two different sports club teams. Basically every kid was held back like this. From all schools. Mater Dei gets called out because they are good at sports.

Girls..half the population are ahead of boys in maturity at the same age. It makes sense.

I have boy/girl twins. There’s a huge difference in maturity, which translates to how well they can keep track of assignments and just plain sit still. It helps boys academically, socially, and, yes, athletically. Mine are on the older edge already and twins, so we have not held back. However, I would start late in a heartbeat for boys born June - September, so that they are among the oldest instead of the youngest. I think when you are talking about late fall/winter/spring birthdays still holding back or just plain having someone repeat a year it gets a little dicier.

To the parent of the boy/girl twin - you should hold back/repeat the boy to test this theory. Preferably 1st or 5th grade.
