FCPS schools hosting religious events?

It’s not okay for the school to sponsor or host a religious event. This isn’t a hard call. Of course the community could rent the space through community use and hold the event. But not the school.

Your world is about to be rocked when you find out that FCPS has rented space for religious groups for YEARS.

Some of you ghouls won’t be happy until every single person conforms to your uptight life.

I’m not Muslim, you know my reaction when I saw an event taking place after school hours that doesn’t involve or impact me?

“Oh, okay.”

And that was it. The insistence of absolute losers to always be the “main character” is exhausting. It doesn’t impact you and you simply couldn’t abide that. This had to become a “but what about me!” situation for a significant portion who weren’t even aware of this until some other loser shared it.

That some are sitting smugly satisfied that they ruined a celebratory community event is just a sign of the times.

What is wrong with you? The post you replied to said it was fine for religious groups to rent space! It’s about the school hosting and inviting.

They are probably the type of person who bends over backwards to defend religious minorities so they can feel better about themselves. Those same religious groups are unlikely to do the same for her.

I think that’s called having principles.

Might want to look into it…

Principles but an inability to read and reason. Principles but a complete lack of awareness of our Constitution.

Our Constitution was never written to preclude local religious activity by government. That was a much later revisionist interpretation, and you know it. Christianity was assumed when it was written. They simply wanted to avoid the sectarian violence experienced in Europe.

The privileged groups are actually the ones we aren't allowed to criticize.

+1 I'm an atheist and don't want any groups inserting their religion into schools. The school where I work does not celebrate Halloween, all music is completely secular. We have stripped every custom that is vaguely related to religious custon away-except Muslim students are given space to fast and pray. Our principal sends out a Ramadan message. I have no idea how this happened other than fear. They are a large but not the largest minority population in my district.

Oh good heavens they’re given space to fast and pray?!

What’s next a moment of silence to begin the day that was campaigned for by Christians trying to back door school prayer in?

A pledge to god to begin the day?

An academic calendar built around Christian holidays?

Being an atheist doesn’t absolve you of being a bigot. You’re just blind to how much Christianity is ingratiated into our culture that you see it as “non-secular”.

Also, assuming you work at FCPS, the county is quite clear that literally any student is free to have time and space to pray.

Sincerely,

Another atheist

I don't work for FCPS. I'm actually ok with being bigoted if that means I oppose one religious group getting to do whatever they want in a public school. Maybe everyone is free to pray and fast at my school but only Muslims have been explicitly invited to do so. That's wrong.

So you’re upset you didn’t get an invite…

Something tells me this is a recurring grievance in your life.

I'm an atheist, I don't pray

And yet here you are offended on the behalf of others who were never excluded but they simply weren’t “invited”.

You might be an atheist but you’ve clearly picked a religious sect to align yourself with.

I like for all my students to be offered the same opportunities.

Is it possible… and stay with me here, that because Ramadan literally requires daily prayer and fasting for the month that it makes sense to preemptively tell students their options whereas your other students are not in that position?

Radical idea

Lent is 40 days of fasting, or at a minimum, fasting on Fridays and Ash Wednesday.

Correct. However, FCPS often make accommodations for students who are fasting, including providing access to prayer rooms and Meal kits. Per West Potomac HS website:
Ramadan Meal Kits
FCPS is offering fasting meal kits for students who are fasting for Ramadan (February 28-March 28, 2025).  Please see this page for more information and to request the meal kits.

It appears that no other faith represented in FCPS requests such accommodations for religious reasons, nor are they announced by FCPS if they were.

Radical practice.

Was this for the free lunch kids?

It’s for everyone:
https://www.fcps.edu/services/families-and-caregivers/food-and-nutrition

The point is not who pays for the meals, or who uses the prayer rooms. The issue is that FCPS is officially involved in accommodating for religious practices of one faith (Muslim).

To the PP: Not a radical idea. A radical practice.

Exactly. This should be offered to all students who may be fasting or none. It’s an exclusionary practice

You mean to say free for everyone, including non-Muslim? Because that would be the only way to make it non-exclusionary.

The issue is that a faith that represents a small section in FCPS is being officially accommodated for their religious practices when it comes to prayer and fasting. Why is that?

I do not know much about the Muslim faith. However, I have taught quite a few kids who got Free Lunch. My guess is that there were concerns that these Muslim kids might not get dinner at home if they were very poor. (I doubt that is true, but it might be true in some cases.) I also understand that children do not fast, so I am not certain why this was needed.

But, honestly, I lean "right" and have no problem with this. Only those on Free Lunch were given meals. I doubt anyone purchased them. Would you?

I think you’ll find allowing religious groups to use public space is actually quite constitutional permitting every other group has the same opportunity. I beg of you to waste your money and try to bring this well trodden legal precedent to a court, maybe you’ll finally be the one to win.

But hey, let’s not let pesky things like facts get in the way of this fun narrative that, checks notes, a community feast to celebrate the end of Eid is basically FCPS attempting to indoctrinate or something

Again. No one is complaining about community use that allows religious groups to rent the space. THAT IS NOT WHAT HAPPENED HERE.

1. Quite a few people are absolutely making that complaint but I digress

2. People are complaining that the community was notified this was happening and are intentionally using bad faith to depict it as some nefarious religious endorsement instead of what it was, a standard event announcement that occurs multiple times a year.

It was an invitation from the school--that is the problem. Not that the event was being held. Now imagine, an invitation from the school that the school was hosting a live nativity scene. Please come and join us for hot chocolate.

Why were the kits free? Lunch isn’t free for everyone anymore. I saw that notice in the school newsletter but just assumed the interested kids would out their lunch code in to get one. Sigh. Why does FCPS keep screwing up?

I think it is actually tied to the push to reduce absences and increase community engagement with the schools. At every South Arlington school where I have worked or had a student the Muslim population had lower participation in events and meetings.

You don't agree that it is problematic for the school to promote a religious event? Big difference between providing space for an event and sending out invitations on the school email.

Bc it looks like fcps is promoting, advertising, and favoring a specific religious group.

It sounds more like they are fostering inclusivity and learning.

That's what it seems and it makes a world of difference for kids from smaller minorities to feel normal and accepted, hard for majority groups to understand.
