Our school doesn't even do multi-cultural night anymore because of people like OP complaining about religious dances at a multi-cultural event. It's outrageous. Let's celebrate people's culture. Yes, sometimes celebrating someone's culture includes something related to their religion. That's okay! It's also an optional event, it's not like someone is saying "It's Ramadan, nobody in the entire school can eat today, you must come break fast with us after sunset", they're just saying "hey, we are doing this to celebrate the Muslim population in our community and we invite you to join us and learn about our culture".
But, the problem has become that only the minority factions are showcased.

Oh please there are plenty of little swedish blonde boys and girls wearing clogs and little paper hats and yodeling at cultural nights at my DCs school.

What is american culture? Friday night football games? Don’t blame these people because your people came over and assimilated and their culture into a grave. You and yours did it because you wanted to fit into white culture or whatever that is. So here you are plain old vanilla ice cream in a sea of butter pecan, rocky road and chocolate.

Get over yourselves. The event sounds interesting. I’m not too old, closed minded or assimilated to appreciate a window into a good old cultural event.

When a group reaches out to people not like them and invites them to break bread, why is that an insult, or a violation of your rights? Do you think you are going to be forced to convert? Do you think they are going to drug you and sell your daughter off into the white sex slavery while you are passed out in the prayer room?

What are you afraid of? The others? You know this group could choose to have their event at a mosque or a local Islamic school, or a community center, but they aren’t. They are trying to build a bridge to the larger community which includes Muslim and non-Muslim brothers and sisters and the audience is the people whose children go to school
with their children. They have roots here in this country and in this community. They aren’t others and they come in peace.

I suggest grab your fork and maybe a box of cookies from a neighborhood halal store. and step out and into your fear. Feel free to leave your daughters at home if you must. Report back.

Wow. You still don't get it. They were welcome to have the Iftar at the school. FCPS should not be sending out an invitation to it anymore than they should send out an invitation to a Christian event.

And, if you do not understand the difference between Swedish dancers (which I don't ever recall seeing at a school, or anywhere for that matter) and a religious event, then you are mistaken.

And, you sound like you resent people who have assimilated. We used to be a "Melting Pot." Sounds like you want a tossed salad.
You want to keep your culture. That's fine, but the laws apply to you, as well. And, that means the principal should not be sending out invitations to religious events.

This country is 250 years old.

Re the Swedish dancers that was kind of my point exactly. It's vanilla blah and it all melts together. You've done it to yourselves.

And America has never been a melting pot from anyone's perception other than those who deemed themselves the dominant group. It's always been a salad bowl, and or maybe a bubbling pot of soup, or oil, gasoline, salt and water.

FYI if you want to know anything about the history of assimilation of cultures in America don't be lazy look beyond what you can glean in 2 seconds in the top level Google AI search result. Lol. You people are hysterical in your simplicity.

And I truly get your fear, the rest of us have always known what's it like to not be a part of the melting pot, so losing status as a majority doesn't scare us in the slightest we adapt. Not much you can do about it, one way or the other, in another 20 year most people won't think or look like you.

It wasn't a religious even it was a "cultural event".

And so what if the principal sent it out? Maybe he's trying to make the school a bit safer for minority kids, including Muslim boys and girls. Maybe there is a bullying problem, maybe the school if full of the children of Ignorant Trumptastic Xenophobes.

I know at my DC's middle school the teen azzhats in Make America Great again hats are doing their best to make life hell for every other (black, brown, Latino, Muslim, Middle Eastern) kid they can, and believe it or not it makes the school a bad place to be for not just the brown kids but the not so brown kids too.

I'm coming to believe that American culture is nothing more than a culture of coarse and vulgar meanness. Many of the comments on this thread are just that and who in their right mind would want to be a part of that?

The PP does get your point. He/she just refuses to accept it. Look at what is going on in the U.K., and in the rest of Europe. It will give you a window into this person’s perspective.

Yes, let's compare a country of hundreds of millions of people and to countries of millions that are smaller than the State of Texas. I'm not even going to get into what happens what happens to a group of people who get dropped down into an itty bitty xenophobic country, and house them into modern day ghettoes. What is the point really simple minded folks can't grasp big things. It's like rolling around and fighting with pigs in the mud, the pigs like it and you just end up dirty. And for the record yes you are the pigs in this scenario.

Guessing FCPS principal is/was a DEI hire.

Tell me I’m wrong.

You are missing the forest for the trees. Even if his intentions were admirable, even if everything you say about the environment for minority kids is true at this school, the principal's actions are still wrong because he broke the rules by doing it. And by breaking the rules and not owning that he did it, it has only further pitted groups against one another. Things are worse now because of his poor choice in both promoting the event on the front end and not being honest about why it was cancelled on the back end. If he truly wants to address the things you talk about, he needs to do it in ways that are "bulletproof" and in ways that cannot be called into question. He needs to work within the boundaries of what is possible to try and make things safer and more equitable for everyone. When he bends or breaks the rules, he can't solve problems and he only makes more.

Believe or not, simple minded folks can grasp big things; that is why last November they voted out the party that espouses your same narrow vision of what working class Americans of all races are about.

It was a religious event as soon as the principal included an invitation to prayer.

There is zero chance to less than zero that any school in sapphire blue Fairfax County is overrun with Maga kids, particularly red hat wearing Maga kids.

At least try a little harder if you are going to make up things.

Are you one of the out of state political trolls?

Is this an FCPS middle school?

I had no idea white people were so scared of other cultures. That's it, you know? The white people here are complaining because they are scared that soon they won't be the dominant culture in this country. That is why MAGA is in power at the moment, that is why the mommies here complained about the Iftar. We all know it, ladies.

You’re so off base. I am not white but I do value America’s separation of religion from gov. You need to stop viewing things so narrowly and try to understand America’s constitution.

For that reason alone, the schools must stop these sorts of entanglements.

So what you are saying is that your family is xenophobic. You're scared of all Muslims? Your cultural group is welcome to hold and invite the community to a Seder, PP. Saying your baby snowflake would feel unsafe at a school because of an Iftar held outside of school hours just makes you sound like a horrible racist, xenophobic person.

I am happy to have a community seder hosted at a synagogue. Not at a public school.
