Is it possible… and stay with me here, that because Ramadan literally requires daily prayer and fasting for the month that it makes sense to preemptively tell students their options whereas your other students are not in that position? Radical idea |
1. Put the time stamp of a post that complains about community use for religious groups. I haven’t seen one. 2. The school doesn’t notify people of community use events. They only notify for school events/FCPS events. They sent out an email with FCPS and school logos about a religious event. This was their event. This isn’t confusing. |
Exactly. I’m one of the PPs who has a problem with the school-sponsored Iftar. I have no issue with religious groups renting school space or even advertising on PeachJar like many community groups do. It’s a decent source of revenue. The school should not be putting this on or advertising it. |
Principal should be fired. What a boob. |
Update: We had no idea about the concept of The Separation of Church and State.
Canceling is good enough, isn't it? We don't really read, pay attention or notice policies or procedures. Things get scheduled without us paying attention. That is ... until we get in trouble over something. |
I never see outrage around school sponsored chorus concerts with Christmas and Hanukkah songs. Muslims and Hindus don't come to DCUM and go on and on. |
School chorus concerts feature songs from a variety of cultures and do not involve religion. This isn’t the same thing. |
Lent is 40 days of fasting, or at a minimum, fasting on Fridays and Ash Wednesday. |
+1. Also many schools have cut out any songs mentioning hannukah or Christmas |
Correct. However, FCPS often make accommodations for students who are fasting, including providing access to prayer rooms and Meal kits. Per West Potomac HS website: Ramadan Meal Kits FCPS is offering fasting meal kits for students who are fasting for Ramadan (February 28-March 28, 2025). Please see this page for more information and to request the meal kits. It appears that no other faith represented in FCPS requests such accommodations for religious reasons, nor are they announced by FCPS if they were. Radical practice. |
Was this for the free lunch kids? |
It’s for everyone: https://www.fcps.edu/services/families-and-caregivers/food-and-nutrition The point is not who pays for the meals, or who uses the prayer rooms. The issue is that FCPS is officially involved in accommodating for religious practices of one faith (Muslim). To the PP: Not a radical idea. A radical practice. |
Exactly. This should be offered to all students who may be fasting or none. It’s an exclusionary practice |
Why were the kits free? Lunch isn’t free for everyone anymore. I saw that notice in the school newsletter but just assumed the interested kids would out their lunch code in to get one. Sigh. Why does FCPS keep screwing up? |
They were only free for free lunch kids: from the website linked by PP: Meals will be provided based on Free, Reduced, or Paid eligibility and pricing. |
