A 29-year-old Palestinian refugee raised in Syria, Khalil wanted to get involved in the on-campus activism against the war, but he was nervous. Khalil faced a dilemma common to international students: He was in the United States on an F-1 student visa. His ability to stay in the country hinged on his continued enrolment as a full-time student.

His lawyer and wife say he got the green card within the past year. Last year he only had the visa.

His wife is also a us citizen.

Ah, LPR status through marriage to a citizen. When women do this, they are called Green card whores.

I have never called them that. And the wife is pregnan. Seems like a legit marriage. Your problem is....?

The First Amendment does not permit you to trespass or vandalize.

Part of this definitely falls on Columbia. They should have cracked down harder when this was all going on. They chose not to.

So the federal immigration authority just deports/arrests people without due process? Wtaf?

Apparently? And it seems at the time, the school did react to violence. An encampment and leading a group is neither violence or assault.
I would like to reitierate that very few of the posters on this board actually care about Jewish people; they simply hate Muslims more.
The continued ranting that simply protesting the war means you are automatically a Hamas lover and a terrorist is so super gross.
Many Israelis and international Jewish people who protest the war would like a word about being Jew hating Hamas loving supporters.
The administration has gone too far.

I'm Jewish and would like to say thanks, but no thanks for the Trump administration's "protection" (from free speech, apparently). They encouraged and fomented these same protests as a way to make Biden look bad so Trump could win, and are deporting them now just for performative reasons, while simultaneously appointing actual Nazi party members to top posts in government.

Give me a break.

What a strange comment (and irrelevant to this discussion).

If it's not a bona fide marriage, then they have committed fraud.

Why do you think it is not a bona fide marriage?

Vandalism is very very illegal.

https://www.columbiaspectator.com/news/2025/01/30/protesters-vandalize-university-buildings-on-anniversary-of-hind-rajab-killing/

"The women’s restrooms on the fourth, sixth, 14th, and 15th floors of the IAB were “vandalized with a cement-like substance causing the toilets to clog,” Dean Keren Yarhi-Milo wrote in a Wednesday night email to the School of International and Public Affairs community.

The walls of the 15th floor restroom were also spray-painted, according to the email. The University defined the spray-painting as an “act of vandalism” in a Wednesday Office of Public Affairs statement. A later statement from the office described the spray-painting as “graffiti that included disturbing, personal attacks.”"

Of course it is, in the States.
There may be a wife or three back home, too.

His marital and parental status are completely irrelevant here. He is not more or less guilty because he has a pregnant wife. They are just trying to play the sympathy card.

Harassing Jewish students with calls for 'global intifada'.

Sounds like we should be letting in more 'refugees' from Syria.

When my parents immigrated to the US in the 1970s (NYC) they were told by their friends: never, ever express support for Palestinians or talk about their brutal oppression. Doing so could cost you your job or land you on government watch lists.

I guess the new generation of immigrants didn’t get the memo.

He has nit been tried and will not be tried by you. He doesn't need a sympathy card.

She in the other hand has my sympathy. ICE's handling of this is deplorable. Of course you liked it. I'm betting free speech is not why you are hear in the U.S.

Trump's handling of this is out of step with former Presidents even ones in the 70s.

Agreed.
Not sure where the chain letter fell apart - back then, everyone knew that criticism of one (and only one) foreign nation would be treated as a national security violation justifying deprivation of one’s rights under color of law.

Maybe Trump will pardon him, since even vandalism of government property is no longer grounds for prosecution and there are good people on both sides of this Israeli / Palestinian dispute, right?
