If these brutal attackers are permitted to return to Whitman, the new principal’s decision making should be questioned. He needs to take steps to secure the halls so students are safe.

I know the first thought is to blame the principal, but don’t go that route.

Often the principal’s hands are tied. There is pressure from Central Office and MCPS as a whole to not kick kids with behavior problems out of schools.

Also, where do you want the kids to go?? They need to go to school somewhere. Whitman is as good a place as any.

I meant how many kids are in that group home program—20 or 200 or what? (As opposed to teens that are actually living at the Greentrre shelter, which I think is a totally different situation—I think those are kids/teens living with their moms who have fled an unsafe living situation like abuse. It seems like they are not the problem—it’s the group home teens who were placed there as ann out-placement from juvenile justice involvement.).

That would be the logical solution, but again that decision is made by someone other than the principal.

Why do the rules not apply to the schools? If you are walking down the street and a couple of people come up to you and start hitting you, beating you up, kicking you in the head it’s not a fight. It’s assault.

Again, principals have full latitude for how they categorize incidents in their schools. If the principal says it's a fight, it's a fight. And MCPD backs off and doesn't question it.

Sent to Juvie? They are already in a shelter for offenders.

I don't understand why the parents don't take this to the news. If my kid was beat like that and there was video, it would be all over the local news channels. I'd hold a press conference to share what was or was not being done to resolve the situation.
