Preventable? Do tell. Everyone is waiting.

Granted, I can’t tell a bot from a troll from a room temperature moron online, but I watched an nbc6 Instagram reel of meteorologist John Morales discussing Milton’s growth and severity and he is getting red in the face and having to stop talking to hold back the tears knowing how many people are going to perish in this (preventable) monster of a storm and the comments are just dumb and dumber. Lots of talk about how the Democrats are controlling the weather, that of course this is happening because of the election, this isn’t global warming related at all, “I’m still voting Trump!” etc. Just Dunning Kruger geniuses.

Why do Republicans even bother checking the weather? It’s all based on that which they regard as something they can argue with - science and experts - so why even check it? Go outside and stick your finger in the air if you’re just going to argue.

This.
But unfortunately too many are invested in the climate change is a hoax narrative. It’s very costly. We didn’t have to be here. We’ve known this was going to happen since the 80s, possibly earlier among scientists. There was plenty of time to take action.

And the GOP used to know that. Look at McCain’s platform. But hey, the billionaire Koch brothers did fine.

She’s not the President

The call should come from Biden.

Hey smooth brain. Do some reading. Maybe they put Harris on it because DeSantis wouldn't speak to Biden, either.
"When Biden visited Florida last week, DeSantis decided not to meet with him. The source told NBC they didn’t think the two had talked on the phone despite Biden’s efforts to call DeSantis last week."

S Desatans refusal to speak with POTUS and vice potus being reported in Florida local news? This is crazy

I’m a really mild-mannered and gentle person. I take the insects that get into my house outside so I don’t have to kill them. And I’m hoping terrible things happen to DeSantis that will wipe that smirk off his face. I’m so glad I don’t live in Florida. It would be awful to feel my fate was in any way dependent on him.

Voters in FL knew what he was when he undercut COVID relief while people were dying waiting in line for the ER. They can’t say they didn’t know this would happen.

Enjoy fending for yourself Florida.

A reminder that Tampa is blue and there are many blue voters in the state.

Did it ever occur to you that that is why DeSantis is willing to play games with federal disaster response?

Good point. Get the mayor on the phone.

Make it more reliant and build in different locations— that assume a hundred year storm every few years. Because I tired of FEMA bailing out people the 4th and 5th time they have massive hurricane distraction. The definition of insanity and all that. And expensive insanity.

Well "the hurricane belt" now includes Asheville NC.

So I guess we stop building everywhere from Florida all the way up to New Jersey/New York, which have also been damaged by hurricanes. BTW, that includes DC area which has also been hit.

Which is a bummer. I was eyeing that area for retirement. Scratch that idea.

+1 And can't go to the west coast either! Looks like fly-over country is the place to be!

I hope that’s true. This article is full of people who did not evacuate and died or came close to dying.

Unfortunately, some people don't realize that if you are on the coast, you could be 100 miles away from the eye, or even across the state, and still get a major storm surge.

They’re predicting a twelve foot storm surge. I have no idea how flat Florida is though.

Appalachia was supposed to be a safe haven for people fleeing the effects of climate change, until it wasn't.

Sometimes, it seems like places with seemingly gentle climates have subtle dangers that aren't as obvious as hurricanes.

The Pacific Northwest is often cited as haven, but I wouldn't want to be around when that giant volcano erupts.

Maybe we should all move to Ohio.

Even if that were true (and it’s not), because she is making a courtesy call to start a disaster declaration, not game planning how exactly to deploy resources.

But hey— if DeSantis can do it so much better without federal help, go for it. As mentioned, FEMA is stretched to the breaking point and other states do want their resources. Send them to NC. They want them and desperately need all they can get. Let DeSantis manage this himself. Since he, like Trump, is apparently the only one can do it. I’m sure he has a concept of a plan.

And all the Florida Republicans voted against disaster aid right before the state was hit by two catastrophic hurricanes

The lack of funding for FEMA and the vilification of feds is having a predictable effect. FEMA doesn’t have enough staff available to send to Florida. They are stretched too thin and scrabbling to find people.

Since DeSantis doesn’t value federal disaster assistance, it will be an opportunity for him to show the rest of us the way. But of course this is what Florida voted for: no taxes or regulations. Everyone takes care of themselves.

NYT: But FEMA is stretched not just by the brutal aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which killed more than 200 people and destroyed sections of western North Carolina. Its staff is also responding to flooding and landslides in Vermont, tornadoes in Kansas, the aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby in New York and Georgia and the Watch Fire in Arizona.

The GOP’s mantra has been to shrink the government so it’s small enough to drown in a bathtub. It’s too bad that the people who voted for the GOP can’t be the only ones to experience the world they voted for.

What is our current debt?

Too high to force federal resources on Glorida if they don’t want them.

Maybe not. DD spent a summer at a program T IU-Bloomington and had spent a decent amount of time huddled in the dorm basement while tornados were hitting nearby. Hard to find someplace not affected by some form of severe weather these days.
