I think it’s inappropriate, but probably not unconstitutional, and even if it is it’s definitely not the hill I would die on, personally. |
It’s not intolerance, there are lots of Christians in positions of power trying to push the limits of the establishment clause all the time. They are well funded and organized and continuously bringing cases like the recent football coach one and passing laws like the Bible teaching law in Ohio. The only way (and the best way imo, in our best available system) to combat that is to also fight (legally) constantly over where the line is and should be. I think it’s fair to say that people don’t really care that much about whatever the particular thing in each of these cases is, it’s more about the continual tug of war over the whole concept. I think the bus music thing is probably a bad choice of battlefield and that’s why I would leave it alone. |
You want to bring a religion war in public school? |
No. But I also wouldn't shop in a grocery store that played music I didn't want to listen to. I have choices. The kids riding the bus do not. |
That particular song hit the top 40 and was also played on secular stations. I’ll die your dc is old enough to know it’s a Christian station, but just a PSA that sometimes the music resonates a wider audience. As a Christian, I think it’s okay to ask the driver to switch channels. They can listen to their music on their own time. I’d say the same thing if the music had profanity. |
|
Oh, and I think instrumental is different than music with words. I don’t care what roots the music has, if there aren’t words. I care very much about the language. |
My DC loves all kinds of music, so if they were on that bus, they would have preferred the song playing over the noise. Each parent has a choice of how to raise their own child, and we teach celebrating diversity and tolerance. By the way, we’re not Christian. |
It should be a two way street. |
There are like zero Christians in power on the Fairfax County school board, and very few Christians on the board of supervisors. You are using a fake argument. Teach your kids tolerance. |
Can you elaborate on how you think separation of church and state is a two way street? |
Why is it always christians wanting tolerance toward them, but not remotely sharing the sentiment in the reverse? |
This doesn’t bother me but I definitely think people would see it differently if it was music from other religions. I think a rule that says no religious music at all would be fair. |
Yup |
Public schools accommodate some religions that require multiple prayer times throughout the day. FCPS offers designated prayer rooms for use during school hours. The concept of separation of church and state has grey areas. |
